Written Off as Dead, Ophelia Now a Category 2 Hurricane

The track of Hurricane Ophelia will pass far to the east of Ocean City.

Ripped apart and dying, a storm system named Ophelia lost her status as a tropical storm last weekend.

But Ophelia regenerated and continues to gain strength as she approaches Bermuda on Friday.

The storm now has maximum sustained winds of 105 mph with higher gusts—a Category 2 hurricane.

Ophelia is expected to pass near Bermuda on Saturday morning and continue on a path north over the open water of the Atlantic Ocean, more than 500 miles from Ocean City.

Ophelia follows a path similar to Hurricane Katia, which sent three days of big waves and rough surf to Ocean City—though the predicted track appears to be  farther away by a small distance. It remains unclear if Ocean City will see increased swells from the storm.
