Wednesday Beach Report: No Mayhem Today

The waves, wind and weather at dawn on the beach and Boardwalk in Ocean City.

Between an earthquake and a hurricane, it looks as if we're going to have a mighty fine beach day.

While Ocean City in Virginia and while Hurricane Irene is predicted to brush past New Jersey (just out to sea) Sunday on a path from North Carolina to New England (check back later this morning for an updated forecast), Wednesday morning shows no signs of anything other than beautiful beach weather.

The morning is cool with a fall feel to it. The sky is blue, and our high temperature should be a mild 82 degrees today. The wind is light.

Ocean temperature on Wednesday morning is 73 degrees, and the surf is calm. There are a few nonstinging jellyfish in the surf, but nothing to get in the way of anybody's last summer swims.

Surf: The surf is flat on Wednesday morning. Not really even worth a look in the morning. Things should start to change rapidly as Irene moves north. As with all hurricanes that brush relatively close, Irene's swell will likely be better in the days before she arrives than when she's nearest to us. That means Thursday and Friday could be the days to watch. High tide is 4:12 p.m. today.
