Tuesday Beach Report: Katia's First Swells Arrive

The waves, wind and weather at dawn on the beach and Boardwalk in Ocean City.

Hurricane Katia is still 400 miles south of Bermuda at dawn Tuesday morning, but already Ocean City is seeing some clean lines of waves from the distant storm.

The light wind is blowing offshore Tuesday and cleaning up some head-high surf on the breaks between the First and Third Street jetties. The swell should only build over the next couple days as the . The ocean water temperature is 73 degrees.

Back on the beach, the sky is overcast, and the National Weather Service is giving us a 90 percent chance of rain today -- some of it potentially heavy. The high temperature is expected to be only 70 degrees. Not great weather for the first day of school in Ocean City.

The Ocean City Beach Patrol will guard some beaches this week, including St. Charles, Brighton, Eighth, Ninth, 12th, 18th, 34th and 58th streets.

Surf: The Tuesday-morning surf is excellent, and surfers are praying that the offshore winds hold as Katia's swell builds over the next couple days (although a variety of onshore winds are in the forecast). The storm is predicted to pass closest to Ocean City (still about 400 miles away) on Friday morning. Most of the breaks on the north end are filling up quickly with surfers on Tuesday. Low tide is 9:07 a.m. and high tide is 3:41 p.m.
