Thursday Beach Report: No Swells Yet From Irene

The waves, wind and weather at dawn on the beach and Boardwalk in Ocean City.

On Thursday morning on the beach at Ninth Street, the ocean shows no major swells yet that could be associated with the approach of Hurricane Irene ().

But a strong southeast wind unrelated to the storm is kicking up some choppy surf. We measured 74 degrees Thursday in the shallow water at Ninth Street, and on a longer swim Wednesday encountered a good number of jellyfish (not of the stinging variety, though).

Back on the beach, the sky is clear and the air much muggier than it has been in the past few days.

The official forecast calls for a partly sunny morning with a high of 89 degrees. The National Weather Service gives us a 60 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms after 2 p.m.

Surf: On Thursday morning, we're looking at nothing that looks like the telltale swells of an approaching hurricane -- just some building chop from a steady onshore wind. We could see the first pulses from Irene later today, but most of the surf shops are predicting Friday as the day for overhead waves. Light southwest winds are in the forecast for Friday. Low tide is 10:33 a.m. today.
