Ocean City Residents, Merchants Protest Police Codes

The people fought against the latest regulations of the boardwalk, stating that performers are no longer allowed to accept tips

Citizens and boardwalk musicians of Ocean City stood up against recent police codes at the city’s town hall meeting on Thursday, June 27.

The people fought against the latest regulations of the boardwalk, stating that performers are no longer allowed to accept tips.

Resident Phyllis Kenokowski said that she does not understand the why the musicians are being treated as panhandlers.

The spectators are not forced to pay the musicians, so those that do give tips are just willing supporters, said Kenokowski.

“I appreciate the musicians and think they’re great for the city,” said Kenokowski. “It’s sad to hear that they’re being harassed.”

Mayor Jay Gillian responded to the musicians and citizens by saying that the city council understands the complaints.

Gillian said that he is meeting with the police chief by the end of the week, and will further address the issue.

He went on to say that the musicians are just one of the many groups on the boardwalk that are cluttering the boardwalk.

More and more people are trying to sell or advertise to the visitors, and it needs to be cut down, Gillian said.

“The boardwalk is getting out of hand,” said Gillian. “But it will be addressed.”
