Authors Celebrate Release of 'Legendary Locals'

Fred and Susan Miller speak about their new book, 'Legendary Locals of Ocean City.'

Ocean City historians Fred and Susan Miller spoke Wednesday about their latest book — "Legendary Locals of Ocean City" — and several of their subjects attended the presentation at the .

The Arcadia Publishing Co. book includes photographs and descriptions of 175 people who helped shape the character of Ocean City in the 133 years since its founding.

From founding minister Ezra Lake to modern radio personality Chuck Betson (WIBG-AM 1020), the book covers an array of individuals throughout Ocean City's history.

Fred Miller said the "legendary locals" in the book have all in some way contributed to "America's Greatest Family Resort" — a phrase first coined by the local Chamber of Commerce in 1920.

"Don't you love it when you see other towns come up with different slogans every year," Miller said.

In thanking the Millers for their work, Betson echoed the same idea — that Ocean City has succeeded by remaining true to its roots.

"We've stayed on our message," he said. "We know what we are."

Some of the local legends in attendance included Angela (32 years as city clerk) and Don (30 years as recreation director) Pileggi, Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Michele Gillian, city photographer Don Kravitz, Public Relations Director Mark Soifer, the Ocean City Tourism Commission's Sally Huff (a member of the Nania family), former Exchange Club President Stuart Sirott and Betson.
