Hurricane Katia on Track Far From Ocean City and U.S.

But there's some chance the storm could send surf to the New Jersey coastline next week.

A newly formed hurricane still 1,000 miles east of the Caribbean Sea appears to be on a path that will carry it up the Atlantic Ocean and away from the East Coast.

Hurricane Katia was named on Wednesday evening when her sustained winds first exceeded 74 mph. The Category 1 storm (74 to 95 mph winds) is expected to become a major hurricane this weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center. (Major hurricanes are Category 3 or stronger, with winds of at least 111 mph.)

Long-range forecasts suggest the storm will travel west then turn to the north, passing near Bermuda and remaining over the Atlantic Ocean, far to the east of the U.S. next week.

While the track forecast is subject to change, there's some chance that Ocean City beaches could see surfing swells from the distant storm.
