Historical Images: Boardwalk at Ninth Street

A new weekly feature includes photographs from the Ocean City Historical Museum collection and from the modern era.

This week's "Then and Now" features a few famous Ocean City landmarks: the Boardwalk, and .

The first image is a view looking north from Ninth Street and the Boardwalk in the summer of 1928. It was the first summer for the newly rebuilt Boardwalk. The original Boardwalk was located about 1000 feet back from where it stands today and was destroyed in a fire in October 1927. Looking down the Boardwalk, there is a sign for the Strand movie theater that was showing Four Walls starring John Gilbert. The Music Pier was under construction, billed as the Concert Hall and Civic Building beyond the ocean-side pavilions.

In the second image 83 years later, the view from Ninth Street and the Boardwalk hasn't changed all that much. Thousands of visitors flock to Shriver's every year. The pavilions have been washed away by storms and replaced with dunes thanks to beach replenishment projects. The Music Pier hosts a variety of performances and city events year-round.

We have the best boardwalk in the world and we have the pictures to prove it! Sing it: From the park (Wonderland or Playland) you hear the happy sounds of a carousel, you can almost taste the hot dogs and French fries they sell, Under the Boardwalk, down by the sea, on a blanket with my baby, is where I'll be."

Great pic, I love these old shots of OC from years ago. I guess we can't get "Under The Boardwalk" so to say anymore, but as I spent many hours in my youth on and "Under" the Boardwalk, it's great to see! :) Not quite the Drifters Song, but still fun. :)

I'll be in the Music Pier July 30 listening to the Drifters sing "From the park (Wonderland or Playland) you hear the happy sounds of the carousel, you can almost taste the hot dogs and French fries they sell, under the boardwalk, down by the sea, on a blanket with my baby (Susan), is where I'll be." Thanks again Michael McMahon and the Ocean City Historical Museum for the wonderful pictures.

Had my first kiss under the boardwalk in 1960. It was a wonderful time to be entering teen age years and OCNJ was a wonderful place to spend a few weeks in the summer. We had so much hope for the future during the time those songs were popular. Hearing them again takes one back to that feeling if only fleetingly. Sigh. . . .
