Make sure you ask him why the Hartzell, Ping proposal for hiring EMT's, hasn't been started. If they just keep hiring Fireman the City and all the taxpayers, are losing hundreds of thousands of dollars, for years to come.
Mr. B September 05, 2012 at 06:30 PM
you want a EMT showing up to your house if it's on fire? or would you rather have a dual trained Firefighter/emt? I know what I would want.
John Smith September 05, 2012 at 08:32 PM
If it hits the fan... and Virgil Harris can't save me or my house... then I want a dual guy
Al Czervik September 05, 2012 at 09:29 PM
We should be so fortunate that the entire department was made up of Virgil Harrises
Al Czervik September 05, 2012 at 09:37 PM
Chief, be prepared. If you walk in and they're stirring a huge boiling pot of water, run out.
bob smith September 05, 2012 at 10:09 PM
Big Bob, the savings are an unknown dollar figure. Even councilman Hartzell admits it is impossible to determine the savings. Please enlighten us on how you calculated hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Virgil Harris September 06, 2012 at 05:26 AM
Well I guess I just need to weigh in on the topic. I do not have a problem paying firefighters, or even cops and public workers more under this one understanding; In the off-season, when these guys are collecting their beautiful salaries they have to work and not just sit in their stations or drive around the city. For example, pick up trash around the city, pick up the birds off the bridge and other activities maximizing the cost for their services. Now that is an idea.
Batman September 06, 2012 at 02:26 PM
It amazes me to no end how uninformed citizens such as VIRGIL HARRIS spew an uneducated opinion and rediculous solutions on a topic which he CLEARLY has no knowledge. As opposed to his statement of the firefighter/EMT's "sitting in their stations or driving around the city" there are several things occuring during the "off season"...and to put it quite frankly, there is no off-season for them. There are constant training excercises, certification renewals, and educational updates regarding firematic techniques and EMT procedures that every one of them is required to stay up to date on. This ensures that in event their services are needed (god forbid by someone like Mr. Harris) every first responder that could potentially show up...24 hours a day...7 days a week...are all at the peak of standards to handle any situation put in front of them. Citizens like VIRGIL HARRIS are a danger and threat to the well-being of our community because their main concern is their tax bill and how the city's staffing effects their pockets...yet, god-forbid he requires these services one day and they are not readily available due to understaffing...he would be the first to sue the city...IF he survived. Mr. Harris, how about instead of yearning to have your uneducated opinions heard on the internet, why don't YOU walk around the city picking up trash and dead birds off of the bridge...now THAT'S an idea!!!!
Virgil Harris September 06, 2012 at 05:45 PM
Let me guess, you are a public worker that is too scared to speak his mind with his real name so he has an alias? Coward. As well, how long to you suspect these certs to take? 8 months of the off-season? And since you seem so in to me, I am sure you would like to know I would never require these services because I am in immaculate health and exercised my right to protect myself. I swear you coddled Union babies. You would stand no chance in the private sector, SUPERHERO Boy!
bob smith September 06, 2012 at 06:16 PM
Virgil, you are a hack. Public employees are hard working, honest citizens. They are homeowners, taxpayers, community volunteers. Our Governor has vilanized our public employees with his rhetoric and slander but that doesn't mean publics employees are evil. They work 40-50 hours a week with no bonus or stipend for a job well done, like in the private sector. Why should a private sector worker receive a bonus JUST for doing his/her job?
Virgil Harris September 06, 2012 at 09:15 PM
Cusack was a hard working, honest citizen I guess. I am amused by people who are always trying to get credit for stuff your supposed to do. All that I want are for guys who are doing nothing to pick up trash and dead birds off the bridge? Is that to crazy?
Bill McDonnell September 07, 2012 at 12:54 AM
How do you know that they are doing nothing? OCFD averages 14 cals a day (5000 div by 365 = 13.69) was not sure you were able to do math. Many times during the winter (Feb) there are 14+ calls a day, before you say all the calls are in the summer, without any facts. Seems like you have the time and are a waste of time, you go pick up the trash, an the wildlife you care nothing about. Info avail to the public any time and giving to council annually if you want any FACTS.
Jack Bumpus September 07, 2012 at 02:03 PM
Virgil, Virgil, Virgil... Why do you hate public employees so much??? You tend to respond negatively to any story regarding public employees. You were/are ready to convict a man prior to his day in court (or did you forget you wrote about Off. Cusack). Did your mother not love you enough as a child? Why so angry? Were you passed over for a "cushy" public job? Why are you not in public service? Didn't pay enough when you started working, or didn't have the stones to put your life on the line if you had to? Don't answer that, I think we all can figure that one out.
Batman September 07, 2012 at 02:18 PM
Your guesses are as incorrect as your information. I am not a public employee and I'm clearly not scared to speak my mind. The alias is to protect my identity from nut jobs like yourself who may one day step away from your computer in your moms basement where you probably live and do something stupid. And I'm sure that "immaculate health" (laughable) will help you put out a fire....so congratulations and good luck with that. Here are some fun facts for you....Taxes will continue to rise...firemen will continue to train and fight fires...police officers will continue to patrol the streets...none of them will pick up trash OR birds....you will continue to complain to anyone that will listen...it will do nothing....you will die miserable having accomplished nothing. Now, Enjoy your weekend and remember to visit any of the city's unguarded beaches for a swim.
