Crowds Cheer Miss Crustacean and Hermit Crab Races

The two events were held on the beach at Sixth Street on Wednesday afternoon.

The Miss Crustacean Pageant started off Wednesday afternoon with a full crowd dancing to the beat of the local rock band 123 Draw and with contestants putting the final touches on their hermit-crab homes.

What better way to spend a cloudy afternoon on the beach than by cheering at a beauty pageant for mollusks?

The annual event is the brainchild of Ocean City Public Relations Director Mark Soifer -- it's one of many wacky promotions that celebrate life at the beach and tip a hat to Ocean City's mascot, Martin Z. Mollusk.
