Beach Report: Wednesday Brings a Cruel Combo -- Hot Air, Cold Water

The waves, wind and weather at dawn on the beach and Boardwalk in Ocean City.

Wednesday is starting out as one of the cruel days that blow in on west winds: brutally hot air and a brutally cold ocean.

A foggy haze is covering Ocean City early on Wednesday, and it's easy to feel how this will slip into the hot and humid day forecasters are calling for. They're predicting a high of 91 degrees on the island and even hotter on the mainland.

Meanwhile, the ocean water temperature at the NOAA station on Steel Pier is reading 67 degrees, and we measured 65 degrees in the surf at 14th Street with our trusty hand-held thermometer. There were pockets of warm and cold water swirling around on Tuesday, and apparently the cold has won the war.

But there's hope for better things today -- and that will come in the form of a sea breeze. Forecasters are calling for light east winds that could accomplish two things: cooling off the air on the beach and warming up the water in the surf.

After thunderstorms rolled through Tuesday night, there's no rain in the forecast for Wednesday.

Surf: The air is still on a hazy Wednesday morning, and a few glassy two-footers appear to be coming in sets. This is nothing to get excited about, but longboarders may want to check some of the north end beaches. High tide is 11:44 a.m., and the surf may be better in the morning on the incoming tide.

Traffic: No issues early on Wednesday.
