Beach Report: Sunday Brings Moon Jellies and Morning Rain

The waves, wind and weather at dawn on the beach and Boardwalk in Ocean City.

The tiny jelly-like that hit the surf earlier this week are gone, and massive moon jellyfish have moved in. The Frisbee-sized jellies were seen on beaches throughout Ocean City on Saturday. Moon jellies are a common occurrence on the Jersey Shore, and they do not sting.

The jellies did not stop huge crowds from enjoying the surf on Saturday. The water temperature was 73 degrees on Saturday morning and is up to 75 degrees on Sunday morning as measured at Ninth Street.

But the blue skies that everybody enjoyed on Saturday are gone Sunday morning. A line of storms moved in before dawn on Sunday, and the rain is continuing into the morning. The National Weather Service forecast says showers and thunderstorms are likely for this afternoon, and they warn that some thunderstorms could be severe.

The surf is small and choppy with a sea breeze pushing it along. The winds are supposed to turn from the southwest during the day, and that won't necessarily help the waves. Low tide is 3:28 p.m.

Getting on and off the island should be easy today. Four lanes of traffic are now open on the Route 52 causeway and MacArthur Boulevard in Somers Point. Check for delays, though, on the Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway.
