Beach Report: Saturday Brings Big Surf and Cold Water

The waves, wind and weather at dawn on the beach and Boardwalk in Ocean City.

On the beach at Second Street on Saturday morning, surfers in black wetsuits dot the horizon in both directions across the north end. They're taking advantage of clean head-high waves with even bigger sets rolling in on occasion.

The wind is blowing lightly offshore (from the west) and giving the surf perfect shape. The westerlies have also done a number on our water temperature. After a long June and early-July run in the 70s, we measured just 63 degrees on Saturday morning.

But on a long swim on Friday, we found pockets of much warmer water less than 100 yards offshore. So if we get the right winds, things could warm back up in a hurry.

The skies are overcast in the morning, but the forecast calls for the gradual return of the sun and a high temperature of 89 degrees.

Surf: If you're reading this in the morning from a home or work computer, stop what you're doing and get to the beach. Great conditions on Saturday morning, but big crowds to contend with. The front that brought our electrical storms on Thursday and Friday appears to be generating a few waves on its way out to sea. High tide is 3:09 p.m. today.

Traffic: No issues today early in the morning. The Parkway will likely back up later this morning with the rental changeovers.
