Beach History: Barney Hungerford Wins 1950 Swim Title

The Ocean City Beach patrol swimmers have won a total of 27 South Jersey Lifeguard Championship titles since 1950.

On Aug. 11, 1950, the trophy winners in the Ocean City Beach Patrol intrasquad swim race were, from left, Barney Hungerford (first place), Paul Geithner (second place) and Farrell Devlin (third place).

A week later, they all competed in the South Jersey Lifeguard Championship. Hungerford won the South Jersey swim, while Geithner finished in fourth place. 

Ocean City’s Jim Macallister and Frank Schiesser won the doubles rowing race, giving the OCBP their second straight South Jersey title.

The OCBP swimmers have won a total of 27 South Jersey titles. Atlantic City Beach Patrol is a distant second with a total of 13 wins.   

The following is a list of the Ocean City lifeguards who have won a South Jersey swim championship and the year they won: Barney Hungerford (1950, 1952), Jack Burnett (1951), Louis Schoener (1954, 1956, 1957), George Haggerty (1955), Dick Thieler (1959, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965), Dave Kelley (1968), Dave Gleason (1969), Curt Sulzer (1976), Sid Cassidy (1977, 1978), Bill Fallon (1981, 1982, 1983), Rob Montgomery (1987, 1988), Paul Mangen (2003, 2005, 2010), Bryan Rahter (2006).
