Finding the Positive ... Covered in Philadelphia Mud

A personal story from the Adventure Mud Run illustrates the importance of focusing on the positive to promote self-discovery.

I have to say I was a bit hesitant when clients, co-workers and friends were eager to do the Adventure Mud Run yesterday in Fairmount Park.

All I envisioned was mud and dirt and being uncomfortable — the negative side of the event. I had heard how many people loved these races and I just couldn’t see how it would be enjoyable. I began processing the pros and cons of why this would be something I should do ... ultimately what I realized was the positives were outweighing the negatives.

I decided to focus on the positive aspects of this down-and-dirty race, and I instantly became enthusiastic about the adventure ahead.

So, there I was in my Zena Warrior Princess Shirt, a beautiful morning in Fairmount Park — music playing, surrounded by friends, clients, family and a great challenge ahead. (This was my positive list!)

The race began and we ran up hills and through windy trails in Fairmount Park.  We hoisted ourselves up and over high hurdles, climbed up walls, carried sand bags and, yes, army-crawled through mud. I felt so empowered that I overcame my fears, stepped out of my comfort zone and tested a true phenomenon of the power of positive thinking.  I had an amazingly positive experience and chose not to focus on the negatives.

Whether it is crawling through mud, beginning a new adventure or taking that first step into change, focusing on the positive side will give you the motivation you need to pick up your feet and get going in the right direction.

I tell clients each day, each moment to focus on the positive aspect of this workout or the benefits of eating broccoli to inspire you to put your best foot forward. Your mind will open its channels and embrace this personal growth.  Positive thinking will transcend into every area of your life.

Hey, look on the bright side of the picture ... what do you have to lose?
