Concerts by the Ocean City Pops orchestra have been an integral part of summers on the Boardwalk for more than 80 years. The orchestra has a home base on the Music Pier (Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace), where a summer-long series of concerts takes place. On Sunday, the Pops performed a tribute to John Philip Sousa featuring pianist Joseph Mohan, a young prodigy from the Julliard School. Check out our gallery of photos from Sunday's performance and look for a schedule of Ocean City Pops concerts in our daily events calendar or with this story.

Ocean City capped off a gorgeous holiday weekend on Monday with a pair of bike parades and the traditional Fourth of July fireworks display. Monday started with bicycle parades on both the north and south ends of the island—with children decorating their bikes and wearing costumes as parents jogged along. With sunny and hot weather drawing people to the shore, it seemed there wasn't a parking spot in the entire town on Monday as crowds enjoyed the beach and boardwalk. The day ended with a 9:30 p.m. fireworks display launched from a barge off the Music Pier. Crowds stood shoulder to shoulder …
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia looked for better weather in Ocean City on Tuesday. Stars and production crews were on the beach and boardwalk filming scenes for the FX Network comedy's seventh season, which starts in September. Some scenes included Playland's Castaway Cove. The sitcom stars Danny DeVito, Kaitlin Olson, Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton as five warped friends who run an Irish pub in South Philadelphia. The full cast was in Ocean City on Tuesday for the filming. The series is "block shooting" four episodes at a time for the fall season, according to John Solberg…
The Boardwalk businesses were all open. The Ocean City Beach Patrol started to guard beaches. And the city was jammed with visitors for three days. Memorial Day Weekend marks the unofficial start of the summer season for Ocean City, and this year the season started in style with beautiful weather. Here are some photographs from the weekend.
The seniors at Wesley Manor enjoy a friendly game of Baggo once a week. The game is played by two competing teams tossing bean bags onto a flat surface with a hole at the top. If the bag goes into the hole, the team wins three points. If it lands half on the board and half falling into the hole, the team wins two points, and if the bag lands on the board, the team gains one point. Baggo is played to 21 points. The fitness coordinator, James Bertram, says the game promotes hand-eye coordination and socialization for the seniors. If one of the players begins to lose team spirit, complain about…
Ocean City High School physics classes burned paper and roasted marshmallows Friday -- without the benefit of fire. The students used only a mirror and the sun. Physics teacher John Herrman showed his class several drawings and documents to explain why the items were burning when mirrors were directed at the sun. The first part of the lab was to burn paper. The students held the mirror and aimed it at the sun. Second, they would hold paper in front of the mirror and aim the sun's reflection on the paper. The paper then began to smoke and eventually started a flame. Black paper worked best for…
A handful of Ocean City High School and Ocean City C-Cerpant competitive swimmers volunteered Wednesday to teach some of their young peers how to swim. The session was the first of four that are part of a cooperative program between the Ocean City Primary School, the Ocean City Aquatics and Fitness Center and the student volunteers. Even though Ocean City is surrounded by water, it's not always a given that all students know how to swim, Aquatics Director Karen Pratz said. She said the program, which has run for more than a decade, is fun for the kids—but also serves an important role in …
Rain on Saturday morning forced the annual Woofin' Paws Pet Fashion Show to move inside, but the weather got progressively better through the weekend. A massive egg hunt on the beach Saturday and a fashion promenade on the Boardwalk on Sunday went off without a hitch. Here's a look back at some of our favorite images from the weekend.
Rain clouds were moving in, and a stiff ocean breeze was keeping things cool. But that did not stop Ocean City residents and visitors from lining Asbury Avenue and the Boardwalk for the annual Doo Dah Parade on Saturday, April 16. Here's a look back at some of our favorite images from parade day.
Charles Czajkowski has been organizing Wii game sessions for Wesley Manor residents up to four times a week for the past year and a half. A favorite event among the senior community, the Wii gaming sessions are ones not to miss. Czajkowski said the event was difficult for the Manor's employees to organize, so he took charge on behalf of his neighbors. His favorite Wii game: bowling. And he's scored two perfect 300s. "There was an employee named Joe, and he brought the Wii down here about two years ago. He taught me how to play it," Czajkowski said. Marie Weldon said she is too weak to pick …
Some of the earliest visitors to Ocean City's beaches this year have been the seals. A harbor seal, a harp seal and a gray seal have been spotted in the past two weeks resting and sunning on Ocean City's beaches. Bob Schoelkopf, director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, said the healthy animals were just taking a break on the beach. He said they are accustomed to resting on ice floes in Arctic waters and may have extended their range because there is less ice this year. He said seal populations are increasing as seal-hunting bans (outside of Canada) take effect. Check our image gallery …
Ocean City High School hosted a fashion show Tuesday to show the latest prom dresses and tuxedos. The Class of 2011 solicited local businesses for the formal wear and door prizes, and students volunteered their time to model the clothing. Local salon employees and beauticians volunteered to get the student models ready for the catwalk. The Ocean City prom is May 21 at the Flanders Hotel.
By any measure, Ocean City High School had a great winter in sports and academics. The winter track and field team, girls' basketball team and girls' swim team enjoyed championship seasons. Two wrestlers achieved individual triumphs. And a handful of students were finalists in a national essay contest. The Ocean City Board of Education took time out before its meeting Wednesday to recognize the students for their achievements.
Children and parents on Tuesday were eager to learn how to make Irish desserts for St. Patrick's Day. And Chef Annmarie Chelius of the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College was equally eager to return to the library for her eighth demonstration. Chelius showed how to make Irish potatoes and how to decorate butter cookies. Her sous chef was her daughter, Victoria, who is in fifth grade at the Ocean City Intermediate School. "We had a taste test, a demonstration on honey, Valentine's day and Mothers Day. We get nice turnouts in the summer," Assistant Library Director …
When it comes to school fundraisers, most groups have bake sales, car washes or something of the sort. But in a town like Ocean City, they know that hearts (and wallets) lie with the nearby sea. Ocean City Intermediate School teacher Nick Verducci helped organize the school's annual Fishing Flea Market, featuring all manner of new, used and collectible fishing tackle. The event was a success and raised money for a most worthy cause: the school's fishing club.
With the Ocean City boys' basketball team trailing Delsea Regional for much of the team's playoff opener on Tuesday, Raider Nation never lost faith. And the Red Raiders rallied for a dramatic 61-53 victory. Raider Nation will get at least one more chance to cheer as the Ocean City boys meet Central tonight at 7 p.m. in another home game.
Four Ocean City High School wrestlers competed in the Region 8 Wrestling Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Egg Harbor Township. Dan Pettit advanced to the state championship in Atlantic City next weekend, while the season ended for Coley O'Brien, Lucas Pearson and Anthony DeSantis. "We haven't had four guys go this deep into regions in a long time," Ocean City coach Dave Castellini said.
Patch contributor Amanda Thomas used panoramic settings to capture a series of images from the beach and Boardwalk in Ocean City at heart of winter. The photographs show the winter solitude that many have come to cherish.
It's not a particularly well-kept secret that the Ocean City Boardwalk is a great place to be in the winter—with its spectacular blue skies, diminished crowds and, of course, its great ocean views. All it takes is a glimmer of hope in the daily forecast, and a surprising number of people hit the boards ... even in February. But as they discovered on Wednesday, Ocean City has its own weather. And when those winds are coming off the water, it can be chilly. Warmer conditions are in the forecast, though, for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
