This week's "Then and Now" features the Ocean City Beach Patrol's headquarters on the Boardwalk at 10th Street.  The building in the first image was built by Jack Jernee in 1928, following the 1927 fire when the boardwalk was rebuilt a block closer to the ocean. It was destroyed in the nor’easter that struck in March 1962. Today, the Beach Patrol's Second Zone headquarters is located on the Boardwalk at 12th Street. This week's "Then and Now" features a home that was demolished in May 2011 at 647 Battersea Road that was know as the DuBois estate. The first photo shows the home, which was built in 1924, circa 1930. The second photo shows the home as it stood for the last 87 years and as many will remember it. The third image shows the home as it was being demolished on May 16, 2011. The final image shows one of multiple new homes that will be built on the lot. This week's "Then and Now" features views of the 800 block of Asbury Avenue from the top of the Crown Bank building at Eighth Street and Asbury Avenue. The first photo looks south at the bustling downtown in the late 1920s. The second photo shows the same view in August 2010. You might notice a number of the buildings on the bay side of Asbury Avenue are still there today, as is the Transportation Center at 10th Street and Haven Avenue. This week's "Then and Now" features the Bourse Building, located on the northeast corner of Eighth Street and Asbury Avenue. Built circa 1895, the building is shown in the first image in the early 1900s. It then was home to Frank Darby Real Estate, Maddock’s Pharmacy, and Hole in the Wall by the Sea Light Lunch with an entrance on Eighth Street. The Bourse Building later was home to the first national chain store in Ocean City: G.C Murphy’s 5 & 10, which opened circa 1930. The second image shows the Bourse Building today. This week's "Then and Now" features the home located on the northwest corner of Seventh Street and Wesley Avenue. The home shown in the first image was built circa 1890 for Robert Fisher, who was among Ocean City's first year-round residents. Fisher was a native of Ireland and served as mayor in 1895. As shown in the second image, the home still stands, although its appearance has changed a bit. This week's "Then and Now" features a streetscape looking southwest down the 1000 block of Ocean Avenue.  The first image shows the historic block circa 1920. Note the street was unpaved but graded with curbs and drainage. The street light on the left side of the image is suspended from a pulley so the light could be lowered for repairs. Midway down the block there was a home with its own tennis court that is now a parking lot.  The second image is the street as it appears today. This week's "Then and Now" features a downtown landmark that has been standing for more than 100 years and is located at 858 Asbury Ave. In the first image, taken in 1939, the building was occupied by Johnstone's Restaurant. Take note of the businesses name in the sidewalk. The second image shows the building as it appears today, home to Spinning Wheel Florist since 1973. Johnstone's name is still in the sidewalk. This week's "Then an Now" features the garage located on the northeast corner of Seventh Street and Haven Avenue. The first image shows the garage circa 1925. The vehicle shown is a 1925 Flint B-40 Touring, an American auto marque made from 1923 to 1927. Note the train tracks running down Haven Avenue and the gas pub on the curb along Seventh Street. The sign on the side of the building advertises "The Flint Six - Sales and Service." In the 1930s, the building was used as Ocean City Beach Patrol's Boat House. This week's "Then and Now" features two views of the first cement home built in Ocean City—located at Plymouth Place and Atlantic Avenue.The first photo shows the home shortly after it was completed in 1909. The second photo shows the same view in August 2010.The cottage was built in 1908-1909 for Gaston Daus of Philadelphia by the American Cement Company. It is constructed of 6-inch-think poured concrete. If you look closely at the exterior walls, you are able to see the imprint of the wooden boards that held the liquid concrete until it hardened. This week's "Then and Now" features St. John Lutheran Church located on the southeast corner of 10th Street and Central Avenue. The church was originally built in 1924 and is shown in the first image in 1945. The second image shows the church as it appears today. The addition was added in 1950. This week's "Then and Now" features the building located on the southwest corner of 10th Street and West Avenue. The first image shows the building circa 1910. It was originaly built by the Electric Company to house their offices. The water company's water tower is seen in the background.  Today, the building is home to Orchid Realty and H&R Block. This week's "Then and Now" features the building located at the corner of Eighth Street and Haven Avenue. The building was known as Redman Hall when it was built in the early 1920s and has served a variety of uses through the years. It was was the resort's most popular fraternal, social and sports center and held basketball games, dances and meetings. It was later home the Sentinel-Ledger and converted to its current business use in the early 1960s. Redman Hall was built for the Kalmia Tribe #220 by William H. Smith-Builder at a cost of $75,000. Smith was a past sachem of the Kalmia Tribe.  …
This week's "Then and Now" features a home that was originally located at 10th Street and Wesley Avenue and is now at 10th and Pleasure Avenue. The first image shows the home as built at 10th and Wesley in the 1890s by Dr. Graham. The people on the porch are said to be lined up for the census count in 1900. The second image shows the home where it is now located on the corner of West 10th Street and Pleasure Avenue after being moved there. This week's "Then and Now" features the building on the northwest corner of Seventh Street and Asbury Avenue. The first photo is from 1895, when the building was home to Adams Fishing Tackle. The second photo is of the building in 1973, when it housed Connoisseurs Corner. You will notice the "witch's hat" on the corner was removed.  The third photo shows the building as it appears today, as home to a real estate office. This week's "Then and Now" features the building that is located at 641 Asbury Avenue. The building was built in 1929 and is shown in the first image circa 1935 when it was home to Sheppard's Garage. Note the old clock-face gas pumps on the curb for pull-up service. Today, the former garage is home to Ocean City Storage and We R Wireless. Ocean City's historic City Hall was designed by a local architect, Vivian Smith, who also designed the Flanders Hotel. The first photo shows City Hall under construction in June 1914. When it opened on New Year's Day in 1915, the ground floor was home to the Ocean City Police Department, complete with eight jail cells, as well as the Fire Department.  In the second picture of City Hall, note the World War I memorial that is on the corner as well as the water fountain. The memorial was moved to Veteran's Park at Sixth Street and Wesley Avenue in 1947 after World War II. The water fountain, …
This week's "Then and Now" features St. Peter's United Methodist Church, located on the northeast corner of Eighth Street and Central Avenue. St. Peter's was established in October 1880 and was named the St. Peter’s Methodist Episcopal Church of Ocean City. Later the name was changed to the First Methodist Episcopal Church and at its 100th Anniversary in 1980, renamed St. Peter’s United Methodist Church of Ocean City.  In the first image, the congregation's original house of worship, built in 1890, is shown circa 1900. This week's "Then and Now" features the historic building located on the northeast corner of Eighth Street and Atlantic Avenue. The first image show the building shortly after is was completed in 1920, and it is labeled the Kuehn Building. The second image shows the building as it appears today. It is home to Ocean City Barber Shop, Ollie's Sugar Shack, as well as residential units on the second and third floors. This week's "Then and Now" features a block that has been an integral part of the downtown since the early days of Ocean City: the 900 Block of Asbury Avenue. The first image shows the ocean side of the block under construction in 1923. Note the individual shops with apartments above. The sign in the picture says: "H.C. Pontiere–Builder of Substantial Homes Phone 688 Office—946 Asbury." Humbert C. Pontiere was a builder and developer for many years in Ocean City. In the second image, you will notice many of the individual shops have been combined for more space. Most of the block remains …
