I have sand in my toes. Now, that's no secret. Since I was a kid and was lucky enough to visit our Ocean City home often, I have loved every last thing about the beach. In my adult years, it has become my place of solace. The sound of the majestic ocean, smell of the salty air, and really, just experiencing the mellow way of life on the boardwalk, will cure anything that ails me.  

It's easy to become swallowed up in the rigors of work and day-to-day chores, but knowing a seashore visit to my mom's is imminent, I breathe a sigh of relief. A day of soaking up the sun, and taking a walk or run on the boards, is my idea of a perfect day, and it surely does take away any stress or problem. 

I was fortunate enough to live the life this past weekend. Sunday was a crisp fall day. The sun was shining brightly. Boardwalkers were just. .. happy. It was an extraordinarily special day, though. My family joined thousands of walkers for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5k. The weather was perfect for the event, the turnout impressive, and overall, the day was a true testament to community.  

This cause is close to our hearts. We walked with the "Grace For the Cure" team, led by my Mom's dear friend Edie Cannata. Edie, who works for Grace Realty, is a survivor, a leader and a true inspiration.  

We walked for other family members who've struggled with this horrible disease, including my late Aunt Grace, and my husband's mother and aunt who have fought the fight and beaten breast cancer. We walked for friends. We walked for strangers. 

It was a spectacular day filled with inspiration, solidarity and hope. It was a living reminder that people do genuinely care, and do open their hearts to help others.
