Volunteers Fan Out to Clean Ocean City in Spirit of Martin Luther King
Ocean City residents and visitors pitch in to clean beaches, parks and playgrounds on the annual Day of Service.
About 140 people volunteered to give Ocean City a midwinter cleaning as part of the fifth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service citywide cleanup on Monday (Jan. 21).
Calm winds and a sunny sky made for ideal conditions for the event for the second year in a row.
The Day of Service marks the beginning of the year of service as millions of Americans honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and volunteer their time to improve their communities. Ocean City has participated in the Day of Service since 2008.
The event brings together families, individuals and groups in a day of service in memory of King. Volunteers met at 9 a.m. at the Howard S. Stainton Senior Center at the Ocean City Community Center to receive trash bags and assigned locations. The groups then fanned out to participate in the cleanup from 10 a.m. to noon, covering beaches, bayfronts, parks and playgrounds throughout Ocean City.
Even almost three months after Superstorm Sandy struck, the volunteers reported finding trash and debris swept by the storm, particularly on the bay side, where it was caught in marsh grass and phragmites.
The Ocean City Community Association partnered with the Campbell Soup Company, the Ocean City Public Works Department and the Ocean City Environmental Commission to cover the Crook Horn Creek nature area near 51st Street. Campbell's Soup will make a donation to OCNJ CARE's Sandy relief efforts as part of its "Dollars for Doers" charitable program.
The volunteers gathered at the Howard S. Stainton Senior Center after the event for refreshments, Campbell's soup and coffee.

Great day saw lots of friends helping clean up the wet lands .Only folks missing were the "Friends of theWet Lands"! They can get lots of signatures on petitions really fast but nobody to help clean up.

Appears Frank knows every member of Friends of the Wetlands - by sight. Remarkable. Wonder also if Frank knows that FOTW members pick up litter on the wetlands year round and not just as part of an organized, publicized media event where they get to mention on the Patch that they were present and make dumb assumptions about who was not. And, while doing so, can also attack the integrity and commitment of his neighbors and their efforts to protect the wetlands and not just pick up some trash once a year. Great judgement Frank (I said sardonically). I hope you employ better judgement on the Ethics Board (I say with grave sincerity).

I wonder at times how sincere the FOTW is at "protecting" the wetlands since many of the people living along that area have expanded their yards over city property and across the railroad tracks, cutting down native folige, destroying the food chain, planting grass, spraying herbicides and insecticides, and spreading fertilizer. Many of us in the 140 who participated Monday pick up trash daily along the beach, in the dunes, and at the wildlife sanctuary along Bay Ave. We turn out to support city sponsored clean-up functions in areas other than those where we live unlike the NIMBY FOTW.

Frank worrell on the ethics committee. He should have been disqualified based on his comments right here on the patch. He is quite antagonistic against 2nd homeowners and he is basically a cranky negative guy. What in the work qualified him to sit in judgement on ethical questions? Yes he is judgemental alright.

Frank worrell is on the ethics board? What exactly qualifies a person for the ethics board. Clearly mr worrell is a judgemental person since he comments about people all the time on the patch making judgemental remarks. Here is a good example. He states that no one from fotw helped clean up based on nothing. Mr worrell, do people wear signs distinguishing their affiliations while they pick up trash? Do you think you should be making accusations against anyone here? Mr worrell, the ethics board should be done away with and you are one of the best reasons yet.

Classic Parker Miller drivel....Most of the FOTW do not live adjacent to the wetlands, as has been established for years, he could not possibly know which if any members and supporters did what he alleges they did at the berm, he cannot know if members participated in the event covered in the story, members of FOTW don't just pick up trash on the wetlands year round and not just once a year at media events but also undertake other efforts to protect the wetlands (often against nitwits like some on this string) and, of course, he makes the tired old idiotic logical mistake of judging a controversy based on what he imagines the motives of the participants to be and not on the merits of their positions.

Frank and Parker - Way to turn a nice story about a productive community event into an angry rehash of arguments and battles you and your gang have not just lost several times now but have embarrassed yourselves constantly in the losing. Here's some helpful advice: The reason you have lost all of the many campaigns to build (utterly unecessary) bike paths in the wetlands is that the case for it has always been entirely restricted to desire (demand, actually) and personal attacks on the environmentalists; and no facts, laws, goals that could not be otherwise accomplished at infinitely less environmental and monetary cost, or sound or even plausible arguments for it. And the city has paid a big price for your careless wistfulness : ill will and $280,000 in doomed reports and permit apps...and about $80,000 more in additional hard and soft costs to the environmentalists. There is nothing good in bringing this up other than it gives a gaggle of crotchedy sore losers some sick satisfaction.

Please tell me that you are all kidding about the person (Frank Worell - above) who wrote that incredibly stupid and ill-advised attack being on the ethics commission. George - you are being satirical, right?! Please tell me you are kidding. If it is true, then "Duck", Ocean City, we got a ticking litigation time bomb with that kind of reasoning and judgment.

Thanks for pointing that out, all knowing Frank Worrell. What would Ocean City do without you, oh wise one. Thank goodness you are on the almighty ethic committee to keep us all in line. After all, you are one judgemental old son of a gun, aren't you? I would like to point out, all knowing one, that. There was a bad storm at which time all the debris washed into the wetlands and there hasn't been much time for anyone to clean up. But oh thanks to you, wise one, there is a little less trash in the wetlands. The problem is Frank you don't have a clue what you are talking about when it comes to FOTW or it's members so why not do us all a favor and shut your ignorant mouth

And Frank. Who knows. U may have to sit in judgement someday , since you are. (chuckle) on the ethics committee and what if a member of fotw is involved? You have written nasty comments on the patch, nasty letters in the paper - you have been downright vile concerning this group. You are obviously not a thoughtful fair person at all. You have made accusations against individuals on the patch that were totally unfounded. Who put the likes of u on the ethics board? Give it up you have not a drop of credibility and you are a puppet for a really vile guy to boot.

Frank - You dig yourself into a deeper hole with every post. The poor judgment and terrible reasoning clear in your first comment on this string (and many on other local issues) demonstrate that you are not qualified to sit in judgment over the reputations of our public servants; and the fact that you persist in responding, and in such a petty and stupid manner (regardless of the provocation) reinforces and confirms it. In fact, at this point I think you should be removed from the Ethics Board - which I doubt will happen, but I hold out hope that someone with some legitimate sway over the Board admonishes you and suspends your participation until you have gone through thorough training and demonstrated that you emerged equipped to think with clarity and fairness. (Another unlikely outcome)

Frank. You and one or 2 others persist in your attacks against a group of people who feel strongly that our wetlands and wildlife need protection. These constant unnecessary comments are totally uncalled for, yet you keep it up endlessly. Your accusations are baseless your comments unfair. Time to hang it up. You and your "leader". It's over so move on to hating another group of your neighbors who are actually doing something wrong. Protecting the wetlands is an honorable thing to do so move on to condemning something or someone else

Please eliminat the ethics commission. We have enough to stress out about and don't need this sword of Damacles hanging over our heads. Look at the behavior and thinking of this member - Frank - and tell me that I shouldn't be worried that my life could be judged by him!
