TV Thieves Strike Ocean City Homes
Crimes were reported at seasonal homes on the 2600 block of Asbury Avenue.
Four properties on the 2600 block of Asbury Avenue reported thefts on Sunday.
In each case, only flat-screen televisions were taken, according to Ocean City Police Capt. Steven Ang.
The crimes took place between Thursday (Feb. 21) and Saturday (Feb. 23). The properties each showed signs of forced entry.
Police continue their investigation and are increasing patrols in the area, in addition to conducting property checks. They ask anyone noticing suspicious vehicles or activities to call 911. Anybody with nonemergency information should call 609-399-9111 and ask for the detective bureau.
Police investigated a string of similar thefts on the south end of the island in 2010, and they implemented a new program last winter to check on unoccupied seasonal properties.

Is there a procedure in place for seasonal residents to notify police of their absence? In other words, how do police know who is in residence and who is not? My husband and I are grateful for the oversight our neighbors provide, but also appreciate the possibility of a police presence alert to any sign of mischief.

Probably not, too cumbersome. There are so many places that are empty, and with owners coming down on occasion during the off season so you should notify police of such a visit otherwise you might have the police dropping in if you came down for a weekend and didn't do so. Their regular property check routine seems best, that is if they really do such a thing as advertised. After all its only shoobies and they'll learn of any break in sooner or later and tell the police then so that they get the proper report as support for their insurance claim.
