Start of Labor Day Weekend in Ocean City Is a 'Flop'
The resort kicks off the holiday weekend on Friday with its annual King and Queen of Plop Contest.
Ocean City kicked off the final big weekend of the traditional summer season on Friday with another of its unapologetically goofy events: the King and Queen of Plop (Fall Guy and Fall Gal) Contest.
The contest is the final in a series of events throughout the summer designed to provide family activities in addition to beach and boardwalk time.
The King and Queen of Plop Contest invites the public to take a fall (in dramatic fashion) to welcome the fall. The contest was held on the beach at Ninth Street adjacent to the Ocean City Music Pier on Friday morning. The contest comes at the start of Labor Day weekend in Ocean City, which includes a series of other special events through Monday.
The weather forecast calls for good beach weather on Saturday and Sunday with clouds moving in on Monday. Forecasters call for a sunny day with highs in the mid-80s on Saturday with similar weather on Sunday. Labor Day on Monday is expected at this point to be mostly cloudy with a high of 81 degrees and a small chance of showers.
The Plop Contest included "celebrity" ploppers, including community groups, businesses and even Santa Claus, but individual entries were judged.
Dolores Wilson of Longport and Becky Dickerson of Ocean City, both 65, were named Queens of Plop for an inflated "fat lady" fall (see video), while 46-year-old Matt Higgins of New York City was crowned King of Plop with a dramatic interpretation of a man eating popcorn on the Boardwalk.
Gianna and Marissa DeMitis, 8 and 6, of Wayne, Pa., were winners in the children's division. Colin McCusker, 9, of Newtown Square, Pa., was second; and Jessica (9) and Aidan (7) Lucas were third.
