Salt Truck Catches Fire, Closes Part of Causeway for Brief Time

Nobody injured in the fire at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

The Ocean City Fire Department responded to a call at 1:33 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 14) on the elevated portion of the Route 52 causeway between bridges.

Firefighters arrived to find a state Department of Transportation salting truck fully engulfed in flames. They were able to control the fire.

The driver had escaped safely, and nobody was injured in the incident. But the westbound lanes of the causeway were closed until the truck was towed away at about 3:15 a.m.

The truck had not been involved in any sort of crash, according to Capt. Chris Meyer. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
