Police Arrest Suspected Downtown Burglar

A Northfield man is charged with stealing about $500 from a downtown store.

Ocean City police used surveillance video provided by a downtown business to catch a suspected thief early on the morning of Labor Day.

According to a news release issued Friday (Sept. 14), Irv C. Segal, 56, of Northfield, was arrested on charges of theft and burglary.

A store on the 900 block of Asbury Avenue notified the police on Monday, Sept. 3, of a burglary that had occurred overnight. The merchant was able to provide a surveillance tape, and police used "distinctive physical characteristics" to identify a suspect, according to Ocean City Police Capt. Steve Ang.

The suspect is alleged to have taken about $500 in cash from a register between 1 a.m. and 1:15 a.m. on Sept. 3, Ang said.

Segal is being held on $35,000 cash bail. The investigation was conducted by detectives Dan Lancaster and Mark Pancoast.
