A Boston Whaler sits on a sidewalk at Eighth Street and West Avenue on Tuesday morning as Hurricane Sandy moved away.
A newspaper box shows the depth of sand dumped onto the beach block of St. Charles Place. The dunes on the opposite side of the boardwalk were devastated by the storm.

With a massive October storm moving west on Tuesday, we get a first glimpse of the damage left behind.

Bruce, a bunch of us stayed back here for the storm. The houses father back and in the middle of the blocks did okay with only water in the garages. Not sure about the houses on the end of the blocks. It looked really close for some on the end of Dory. The playground is intact. The apartments at 55th took water on the first floor. Overall, we probably faired as good as the other highest points on the island. It probably helps that this area was built after '62 storm and there were probably some design considerations.

Bob, we haven't been able to get onto the island. Any idea how our house might have fared at 237 Dory Drive, down by 55th Street?

Bob, how did the area around 27th and West fare? Have a house in the middle of the block on the side of West away from the ocean. Any update would be great. Thanks. Ken

I have a pix of me on the rock jetty with the pier behind me, taken in1949 !
The latest one was taken in October 2012--
I;ve told friends that although the pier, like me, was somewhat dilapidated, we were both still standing. Now, just one of us is.

Thanks for going South with the camera. We were able to see that our family house is still standing! Also appreciate the notes as to specific locations of each picture. Thanks.

Thank you for the pictures. Atleast we have some idea of what we are coming back to. You can break the house but not the spirit there.

Are the benches still on the boardwalk between 12th & 14th street? We had a plaque on one of those benches in memory of my grandparents.

We just wanted to say thanks for all your photos and info. My husband grew up in Ocean City and his mom stayed on the island during Sandy. We live in Seattle and lost phone contact with her for awhile. It was reassuring to see familiar sites to assess what damage she might be facing. We have since talked with her, no power, and no major damage to her house altho her car may be toast. Thanks for staying up to the moment! Hope everyone recovers! Prayers for everyone!

it's funny (or not) how each of us wants to see a picture of our house/street posted here. It's reassuring to look at some of these pics and know we may have come through this ordeal a little better than we thought.

Thank you so much for all of the content and pictures throughout, and thanks to many people posting updates! I monitored your site from Bainbridge Island, WA, and was the only source of OCNJ-specific info to family evacuated and staying in Princeton. They are without cable or internet so they have sure appreciated updates!

I wonder how that Ocean City Marina deal is looking now? also a good thing the dredge pulled out before the job was finished. sorry all. couldnt help myself.
I got over 2 feet of water in my home and am feeling the pain along with everyone else here. Perhaps a little levity will remind us all where we were and where we are now.

I love you Ocean City. You are a beautiful, resilient Island. You will bounce back with style and class. In 8 months, us visitors won't be able to tell that there was a devastating storm that hurt you. I can't wait to see you again.

Doug and group. Thanks for getting the pix of 58th/59th and Central.
I know "my ' pier is gone, but all the sand dunes, also?
Those dunes weren't there in the late 40's or 50's.
Mother Nature has her reasons--although we don't know what they are.

that sounds a little extreme to me, some of the stores on Asbury are already reopened, and Boyars just re-opened Saturday and they had 1.5 feet of water inside the store.. Wawa is really nothing more than a shell if you think about it, clean up, minor repairs and restock the shelves
