Gail. I emailed Doug photos of the south end. The sand extends into West Ave at 55th street. A lot of the ground floors on the beach had waves in them. The dunes are completely gone.

I am on 49th and Haven. Old house, not up high on pilings. 2 feet of water in laundry room, portions of front screened porch gone, tons of debris, yet only one tiny patch of soggy rug in the hallway of first floor, water came in under house, not through doors.

The mayor had a news conference I saw on Channel 6 this afternoon. He said he's never seen such destruction. Said the south end was hit particularly hard, though all town was affected. Said 2 of the fire stations were flooded but were able to put out several fires. Some people have no power, neither does th high school. We're still not allowed to go back. Said Asbury Av. stores had 1-2 feet of water inside. Boardwalk appeared to be o.k. except for ramps leading up to the boardwalk.

Thanks ABrack. According to a tide station in the bay there was about 2-2.5' of additional surge from 5pm to 8:30 (hopefully less than that on "land"). Still hopeful the water stayed below our floor boards.

Natalie, pic #18 in the photo gallery above shows Blitz's at 34th and Asbury. ABrack says the pic was taken about 5pm on Mon., just before the storm made landfall. I think the worst case is that the water got 2.5 feet higher than what's shown in the picture, but could be much less than that based on water lines I see in other pictures the next day.
