Bulkhead at 54th street - approx. 3 hours before high tide

Ocean City, NJ -- The City of Ocean City is under a mandatory evacuation order and has declared a State of Emergency. Here are the first images from high tide in Ocean City at about 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 29.

All access routes off the island are now closed and will remain so during the next several hours.

If water is entering your home and you are comfortable doing so, turn off the main electrical power breaker. For any emergencies, dial 911.

Residents still in Ocean City are advised to remain indoors on Monday as weather conditions continue to deteriorate.

A number of roads are impassable and are likely to remain so for the duration of the storm. this includes roads that usually do not experience flooding. Do not drive through flood covered roads. The water may be much deeper than it appears.

No one is permitted on the beach at this time.

This story and gallery are developing. Check back for captions and more information.

Great pics- reminds me of the 62 storm. What on earth is tonight's high tide going to be like? If they lift the on/off ban later at low tide today- I'd strongly suggest even you sir get out of dodge!!! Thanks again for all you have done the past two days- now get out if you can.

Hey, Walt; i was there in 62 for the "March Storm", too. Now that was a nightmare! So many homes destroyed and businesses demolished. Luckily, the island was mostly deserted that time of year back then. We owned one of the few houses that remained standing on the south end, but wintered on Plymouth Place in the first block off the boardwalk. As a kid I enjoyed the days off from school, though.

Gosh, the storm of '62 was scary. I remember coming back into town a few weeks later and seeing the destruction (we lived on South End). Whenever I look at the houses on West (where the marshes used to be) and up around 57th & 58th, I think to myself that I guess those folks weren't around for the '62 storm. Hope everyone stays safe & have evacuated.

My grandparents had a place back then around 45th and West. Destroyed by that storm. I was very young and remember going down with my parents and driving the island. I can still picture the homes just moved off their foundations or laying in a rubble. We also walked the beach at found some great shells. Just a small child then and I remember it.

Thanks SOOO very much for all the photos and info. It's hard being away and not knowing what's going on. We can see the severity of this beotch sandy as she pounds our beautiful and wonderful Ocean City. Hope we 'weather the storm' with as little damage as possible. Good luck to all emergency personnel. I think you. All we can do is pray and stay safe. Again, thanks for all these photos and info. I'm a long way from there and am worried. Good luck to ALL of us.

peg = there is video on this website of 52nd and central. My parents home is 53rd and central so it gave us first hand info of what has happened. The video shows the ocean coming between the houses and the waves spilling onto Central Ave, it doesn't look good. My parents are out of there since Sunday and safe. We think since most of the homes are built up kinda high that maybe we only have to worry about the cement basement under the house flooding, Good luck and best wishes Kathy

To Linda @800 St Charles:

We're at 810 and we were told that the whole street was flooded, but it didn't reach the level of our first floor. Obviously we haven't seen it yet to verify. This came from a neighbor across the alley behind us who lives on 2nd Street.

First time we ever had water that high, going back to 1975 when our family purchased the house.

I know my family and health for all is the most important. But, my house has been very good to me and my family. I want to thank all of my family and friends that called me to offer their homes and prayers that everything would turn out OK. My home is not very big or fancy but I loved it and hope it comes out of this storm with minimal damage. Good Luck to all.

Doug, thanks for the updates and pics! The Weather Channel completely ignores South Jersey. TWC posts reporters in Point Pleasant and North. The same coverage occurred during "Irene." So, thankfully, people (like me) who are from South Jersey/Philly (& have a condo in OC) but live in other places (like Texas) that cannot get local news really don't know what's going on with their hometowns during severe weather.

And here is a film of the water coming over the bulkhead and heading down 51st street, mid morning on Monday. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10100362834319016 Both of these are not at high tide.

If anyone has info on Wesley between 29th and 30th, please post. Also, if anyone knows of a section by section listing of damage, that might be helpful. Thanks.

I was living at 932 Simpson, and you've all heard me bemoan Irene. This was abject devistation, wish you could flip that up side down video, streaks past my house. I was 1st floor. Lost everything. Imagine there's still a good 3-4 of water still in my apt. It was home people, please be kind in your postings some of us lost everything. We're well aware it was "just stuff" and we are greatful for our lives and our safety, but that sounds so glib when it isn't your stuff, your life. No one would insure me, believe me, I tried. I've lost everything.

It seems like there are little to no reports about the south end of the island today (10/30). If anyone has info or pictures of 52nd and central or anywhere around there we would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Spoke to someone at 2 pm today that remained in their home in the 1400 block of Asbury Avenue during the storm. They reported the following; the homes visible from her home had no visible damage. The water reached a height of approx 2 ft. There was no sand in the roadway, however, there was some debris. This person had power to their home. No additional info to report.

I have heard Stenton is largely dry from a resident on the street. Water never breached the sidewalk curb.

Any word on the bay side? Did the bay rise up and how extensive was the flooding.

Interested in Glenwood (at the end of Spruce St.) that runs along the bay.

Thanks.

Go to the ABC station in Philly (Channel 6) webpage. Chopper 6 did a 20 min flyover of the entire OC area this morning so you can visually see everything. Doesn't look like a lot of structural damage. Can't tell about the water damage though

angnic46: I don't have pics, but I have been told by neighbors that the water only came down St James from the ocean to mid block...I don't think it got to the corner of Atlantic.
