Photo Gallery: Storm of '62

William D. McCloskey shares his photographs of the devastating 1962 nor'easter.

At the time, J. Carroll McCloskey was living and working for White Autocar in Philadelphia. But his mind was 60 miles away at the shore home that was at risk in the powerful coastal storm that swept away Ocean City's Boardwalk over the course of three days in March 1962.

McCloskey and his wife, Helen, an office manager for Neatsfoot Oil, made the trip down to the shore soon after the nor'easter subsided on March 8 of that year.

McCloskey arrived to find the home he had purchased in 1958 at 205 23rd Street had weathered the storm without damage.

Fifty years later, William D. McCloskey, 81, is eager to share the photographs that his mother and father took in 1962. McCloskey inherited the 23rd Street home and shares it with one of his daughters, Jackie Mittleman, and her son Alex.

"In all the years of flooding, this house has never been flooded," Mittleman said.

But the house sits in a low-lying area between Haven and West Avenues, and moving cars to higher ground is a ritual.

"You have to pay attention to the weather every day — and not just for what you're going to wear," Mittleman said.
