Osprey Project Visits Ocean City to Elevate Damaged Homes
Learn how you can help an effort to rebuild osprey nesting platforms.
Ben Wurst and Larissa Smith of Conserve Wildlife NJ brought a team to the south end of Ocean City recently to erect an osprey nesting platform, replacing one that was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy.
John Thornton, a videographer who lives on Dory Drive in the Ocean City Homes neighborhood, was on hand to film the work.
"I happened to look out the window a few days ago and saw some people erecting an osprey nesting platform off 55th Street in place of the one that was wrecked by Sandy," Thornton said.
"Naturally, I ran out and filmed what I could. It is such a positive story, the people who do this work are are so likable — plus a lot of us people in Ocean City love our birds."
Watch Thornton's film to learn about the conservation efforts to help these beautiful birds and to find out how you can help.

I think this is really cool as I love to watch the Ospreys in action. I think I saw this team erecting one at 8th street marsh on sunday 3/17, complete with a solar panel, tide monitor, flat screen TV, Go Pro III with WiFi. (Kidding). Thanks to this team. Keep up the good work.

Why do these people put these nest poles next to known fishing spots where people have fished for decades. Is it laziness or is it their way of trying to keep humans out of the marshes?

Ya gotta love commenters like Oceancity Resident. Why do they put Osprey (fish eagles) next to places where fish live?
BTW I routinely kayak within feet of some of the boxes. Does not faze the birds a bit.

You know as well as I do that shore bound anglers have limited places they can access to fish. In recent years the lazy birders have been placing these poles right in the middle of the most popular places that people fish. I'm sure somewhere there is a law saying us mortals are not allowed to be with X number of yards of one of these nest boxes. Is it too much to ask for you folks to place the poles off the beaten path. Get your city slicker feet muddy. Don't be lazy and put them in the easiest spots you can find. Go put them deep in the backwaters away from where people currently enjoy what limited access we have. Is that too much to ask? Next it will be you folks who will be crying about fishermen being near the nest boxes when we were here long before you put in those nest poles. And save the next stupid response of the birds were here first cause last I checked those poles don't naturally appear in nature.

Listen grumpy, the folks who built those nest systems have more time on the marsh than you will EVER achieve! They both work or. volunteer to take care of the birds on year around basis. As to placement, in most cases they are replacing a pre existent natural nest that predates You. The birds don't usually care about your presence, if they do they will self police ......and you will get the message.....I cruise by several nests on a weekly basis to watch the chicks grow an to see what fish the adults are catching.......look around out on the marsh, it's a real education...

People may have fished there for decades but the ospreys have been nesting in those areas far far longer than that. How is it a problem??

Visit Staintons to see the awesome carved Osprey and the the large nest with the carved babies peeking out of the nest. It is an incredible display!

Thanks Barb! The osprey nest started out as a prop to give the right feel to our new space at Stainton's showcasing nautical themed furniture from "Authentic Models". We needed something to make a connection to two other spaces we have called "Birds Eye View", but the nest took on a whole new life of its own when Lance Lichtensteiger, a famous bird & wildlife carver came on board with us. We are thrilled to have so many new pieces of his unique art, transforming wormy chestnut logs into life size & life like creatures that you will swear they just moved! So creating a theme has turned into an entirely new product line for Birds Eye View".
We hope you will all come see . . . And PS . . . We think Ben Wurst & many others are doing a great job & service to the community. . . . We & the osprey thank you!

Oceancity Resident is right!!! Osprey suck. and osprey nests placed where people say they go suck and when that is where the fish are, well, why make it so easy for hte opsreys (ospries?)....that makes them lazy and lazy sucks because then you get lazy osprey babies and next thing all you gots is lazy osprey and they cannot compete so they dies out. So! First off, it sucks to fish where people have to figght the opsrey for the shorty flounders, and then by putting thems poles near the fishes you weaken the osprey as a species so you make it suck for fishermens and the ospreys - so don't raise our homes - unless you raise them and move them close to the fish, then I can sell my boat and fish from my bed out the window and such. That would not suck.

OC resident, I love how you randomly call people lazy, stupid and city slickers. You're a resident of Ocean CITY, hardly a country or farm setting. Do you regularly yell at kids to get off your lawn? Lol. I fish a lot and have never had an issue with the boxes or been prohibited from being near fhem. In my opinion it improves the natural experience and is a nice opportunity to help nature instead of destroying it (as is the norm). Did an osprey once steal your catch or slice of pizza? You sound so disgruntled, perhaps the forthcoming warmer/sunnier will mellow your displaced anger.
And Duffervic, I'd love to grab a beer with you someday and hear more! Hahaha

Furthermore to OC resident, I'm quite aquainted with the area in question behind Dory Drive- a very good friend of mine lives there. The only place you can fish back there is the ICW which is pretty far from the Osprey nest- I'd be much more concerned if the nest was behind the OC AP at the bend north of the 34th st. marina- if you get my jist!
