Ocean City Firefighters Assist With Strathmere House Fire

Two Ocean City firefighters suffer minor injuries.

The sirens blaring through the south end of Ocean City about noon on Friday were from Ocean City Fire Department engines assisting the Strathmere Volunteer Company with a house fire.

Nobody was home when a fire broke out at the corner of Commonwealth and Tecumseh avenues in the Strathmere section of Upper Township. A pet dog was safely removed from the home.

A "stubborn" fire that traveled under floors and between walls of the balloon-construction home caused an estimated $100,000 worth of damage, according to Ocean City Fire Chief Chris Breunig.

Two Ocean City firefighters received minor injuries (hand and neck), Breunig said. One was transported to the hospital.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Breunig said it appears to be accidental.
