Eleven members of the Ocean City School District support staff received a welcome surprise on Thursday morning: a $1,000 check.

Each of the 11 was displaced from their home by the Oct. 29 Superstorm Sandy and forced to find temporary shelter elsewhere.

The money is from a special New Jersey Education Association Back to School fund dedicated to helping the hundreds of members throughout the state who were displaced from their primary residence by the storm.

The checks were presented by Kathy Sykes, president of the Ocean City Educational Supportive Staff Association, in a surprise event on Thursday morning at Ocean City High School. The money comes in time for a holiday season disrupted by the storm, and some of the recipients cried at the show of generosity.

The recipients include:

  • Kristy Allegretto
  • Janice Baldyga
  • James Davis
  • Karen Holder
  • Joanne Martin
  • Charlotte Williams
  • Irene Bell
  • Cheryl Clearkin
  • John Fenton
  • Bernard LeVasseur
  • Ruby Moses
