New Causeway Taking Toll on Gulls
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports on a new breed of roadkill on Route 52.
Almost 40 herring gulls have met an untimely death on the newly designed Route 52 causeway leading to Ninth Street in Ocean City.
The Philadelphia Inquirer's Amy S. Rosenberg reports on what is likely a wind phenomenon that puts gulls on a collision course with cars on the new causeway.
The hazard to the coastal birds appears to an unintended consequence of the new fishing piers that are a popular new feature of the $400 million causeway project expected to be fully complete by the end of the year.

I was waiting for this to be news eventually, and I'm sure more than 40 have been hit. They aren't most people's favorite bird but it is sad to see all of these deaths daily on the $400 million traffic jam creator.

Only the news media would find a nagative comment on this project. Let's see how many positive comments we can find on eliminating a traffic nightmare.

Big seagull flying into of my windshield while I'm driving across the new bridge = traffic nightmare for me and everyone driving behind me.

You've got rails that act as perches for the birds to hang out on for miles. No stopping it. Oh well.

Traffic Jam creator? Oh I degress, easy problem to fix, not that we locals know everthing but just string fishing line down the railing about 2" high and the birds will not land. So "no stopping it" is really easy. Guess the last one over the bridge does not know EVERTHING.
