Will the dunes hold back the water? High tide was touching the base of the dunes this morning. Can they hold back the storm surge? We are going to lose a lot of precious beach!

For those wondering how the dunes are faring, not good. I was wacthing the web cam on 2nd St Boardwalk and the waves have wiped out the dunes already and the water is under the boardwalk and down to the street.

It's almost CRIMINAL that Kelaher and TR Council have no announcements on TV this morning (Sunday) while Brick channel on FiOS reports island evac. & banning of all traffic on twp. rds. by 11 pm tonight. Somebody wake them up (or did they fly to the Cayman Islands?). Only TR fire dept. has any bulletins for residents. Thank goodness for news on Patch!

Can anybody check and fix the live cams on "attheshore.com" most only give a java script void response when you click on them. Even the double shot cams are down- help! As for Pysanky's dune holding question, the last low tide bottomed out at plus 1.5 feet- a full 4 feet higher than the previous low tide- Someone worked very hard in oc to place mounds of sand in front of the dunes the last two days- they will not hold.

I found a very good site that gives updated and accurate and not hysterical information about the progress of the storm. It is called The Wundergound and here is a link to it =http://www.wunderground.com/blog/angelafritz/comment.html?entrynum=30
As for the people who stay or go - I think the job of the government is to tell you the risks and the information and leave the decision up to you. What i do not like is when 'emergency personnel' start telling you what they wont do in an emergency. The reason i call them 'emergency personnel' and not 'non emergency personnel' is because when an emergency strikes they will get to people and help people wherever they are. That is their job. People who leave are not stupid and neither are those who stay. They each took in information and made a call. But whether the call worked out or went bad, the emergency personnel are supposed to handle EMERGENCIES. And they dont get to pick and choose and set conditions on what they will and will not do - if that is the kind of job they want, get out of the 'first responder' business.

Eleanor - I'd love to know what article / news source you're referencing which states what first responders will and will not do. Their lives are equal to yours and mine, they are heroes without magical powers. First responders, 9/11 a wonderful case in point, shows that the extent they go through to save others before themselves. Who are you to say what they should and shouldn't go up against? Who are you to estimate the amount of first responders available to the emergencies they are expecting to have? They too will face not only the emergency, but the panicked, possibly injured individuals who needed help. They too will need a break. They too will have their own families and homes to be worrying about while they work. The best case would be for people to heed warning in EMERGENCIES so that lives of first responders would be in better hands.

I think this is a rather selfish world-view - I do agree that people should make their own decision once receiving information. However, if individuals choose to ignore serious warnings, such as those issued for this hurricane, then they really should have no expectation of being bailed out by first responders.

Eleanor,

It is people like you that cause so many problems for those in the emergency services. WHY on earth would you stay and risk your life and EXPECT someone to come and magically save you from your own stupidity. Emergency Services were not given a pass on death and injury. They are human beings with families as well. You are probably the first one to yell when they make a mistake but they are the first one you call when you need help. It is people lik you that frustrate the h e double hockey sticks out of me. Walk in the shoes of a police officer, fireman or ems worker before you start running your mouth!!!!!!!!!!!!

How arrogant are you to believe that others must put their lives in jeopardy because of your stupidity? Because you made a calculated decision to stay is fine, but then when water comes in you believe its an 'emergency'--it is not! YOU CHOSE TO STAY NOW LIVE WITH IT! The government, you know the 1st Responders bosses, told you that services would be suspended. The PD/FD have their hands full of true emergencies--they are not society's baby-sitters, they are a reactive force to mitigate true emergencies!

Question Eleanor....do YOU think it's right to put an individual (first responder, police officer etc.) in a life threatening situation because YOU didn't heed the warning of just about ANY weather service, hurricane news service or news agency? We had DAYS to prepare and more than ample time to get the hell out of dodge. But YOU found a website that told YOU what YOU WANT to hear and perhaps chose to be stupid? And, by all means, if YOU didn't leave, you are stupid. I hope if you chose to stay you 1. Are a VERY good swimmer....or...2. Were provided with a means of identifying your body, toe tag, your name written on your body with indelible market etc.... FYI...stupidity on YOUR part does not nor should not constitute an EMERGENGY on the part of any emergency responder. Good luck...I hope you don't become part of the lower end of the oceanic food chain.

Dear Eleanor,
I am a first responder in New Jersey. If an emergency arises today, tonight, tomorrow and the days to follow, rest assured, we will be there to assist. By emergency, I mean house fire, motor vehicle accident, etc. However, If you are dumb enough to stay on a barrier island AFTER you were told to leave, we will not come to rescue your non intelligent backside. We're smart enough to know better, if someone else isn't, shame on them. As for your post, it is very offending to first responder everywhere. We are people too, with families that worry every single time we are called to do our duty.
It's people like you, who sit home all day on the internet who have no clue what we do for the public. Why don't you get off your butt and go to your nearest fire house, police station (if your not wanted for anything) or ambulance squad, and ask what some of the calls they respond to and what they do?? Educate yourself before making stupid posts such as the one you did here. One last thought for you, first responders are brave enough to go out in this storm, your not even brave enough to use your last name here.

WE DONT NEED THEM> WENEED OUR OC OFFICERS. While I'm at it they should be OFF the island. And why would they move the police shelter closer to the water. Who made that decision. Maybe you are tired and cannot think clearly. You can contact me if you need some logical answers. THE ocpd should have been taken off the island earlier. Screw those idiots.

A few people have asked about 22nd and Wesley and 22nd and Central.
Wesley between 21 and 22 is passable. The half block from 21st Street to the boardwalk ramp is under several inches of water as is the street along the east side curb. The west side of the curb has little pooling water. The Wesley Avenue view of the properties seems okay. The alley between Wesley and Central is wet with some puddles and there is a lot of water collecting on the lot on 21st and Wesley.
Both Wesley and Central in this area have been drivable all day from the number of city maintenance trucks and police cars and a few SUVs that have passed.
Except for a few flickers around 6 PM, we still have power.

Hi Jane, I was wondering if you know if there is any damage to the house next to the empty lot at 21st and wesley, I'm worried about any wind damage because it is so exposed and or flooding. Thank you for the update above, it is the only I have read for this area.

To Erin: If you're talking about the yellow house on Wesley next to the corner lot, it looks fine, though the lot got a bit soppy. Water never got as high as the sidewalk or driveway.
To Jeff: Was by 22nd and Central this evening. A lot of debris on the southwest side of the block on the sidewalk. A few panes of glass behind the house on the northeast corner. The sort of debris that you see after any hard storm.
To SAS: The dunes from 21st to 22nd look okay. There is some beach erosion.
I plan to take a longer walk tomorrow, and I'll check back in.

Hi Jane, we reside in Chicago, iL and Naples, FL so the distance precludes us from getting to Ocean CIty immediately to check on our home so if you happen to be out walking the neighborhood over the next day or so and can view 2520-22 Wesley for me that would be greatly appreciated as although I hear we are DRY ya just never know if a window got blown out or if a tree fell over (we have a big Christmas tree style tree in front of the home) and it'd be ashame to hear it fell over and caused any harm to anyone or is blocking the road etc. My direct e-mail is barbara.gorman@sbcglobal.net if you have anything of major importance to report or on this forum is OK as well as I believe updates are sent if you add them to the post. MANY MANY thanks for alleviating some worrying that we had been doing from afar! BG

Only the ipe sections of the boardwalk survived..kidding
Most of the island is under water or was under water at some point. Most of the north end has lost power, there is still some power in the south end. Some of the highest areas in the city that haven't been wet in 50 years are under 3+ ft of water...the waves came over just about every bulkhead I'm pretty sure..the newly rehabbed dunkn donuts is trashed..if they didn't go with the lowest bid to do the work maybe thier walk in freezer section of the building wouldn't be floating down west ave..stay smart and safe everyone !!

Update on the area of 21st and 22nd from Wesley to West:
Wesley, Central and Asbury in this area are clear and drivable though we have gotten the calls asking everyone to stay off the roads. The side streets are clear from the east border of West to Wesley. The half streets from Wesley to the boardwalk are still under a few inches of water.
One house on the corner of 22nd and Central appears to have lost some window glass. Other than that, the major issues are a lot of debris (dead leaves, mulch, etc) and several of those wooden garbage can holders that were blown around. On the south side of 22nd between Central and Asbury there was a bird feeder on the sidewalk. Several roof tiles all around. A house on the corner of 21st and Central has lost a small section of white siding.
We still have power on Wesley; however there have been a few flickers and we heard from people who live on West in the area of 21st-22nd that they lost power.

Rec'd a report on the north side of W 16th. 2 huge trees feel into the street and ripped up the sidewalk and took power pole with them abt 6 houses west of Bay ave. Other than that, no wind damage to houses evident. Near as I can tell from the debris line on my house, water level topped out at about 30 inches. At my house, that put the waterline just below the front door. Water likely seeped into house from underneath.

We live at 1606 Central Avenue and live in Illinois. It's difficult not to know what to expect. Hopefully someone will be able to provide all of us who live far out of state with specific details before too long. I know that we will have to get there soon if there's been water damage because of mold issues. We are grateful that our first floor is about 4.5 feet above our front lawn and hope that was enough.

NJ Dreamin' we have a place at corner 13 & central (1236 central). heard from asbury owner that his realty office right across alley had only 6-8 inches of water on ground floor so we are hopeful that it is our garage only but not yet allowed back on island. not sure how much higher/lower you are than us but thought i'd bring you whatever info i could since the city is not forthcoming with any info hope you did not sustain much. all the best...ps i'll try to check on your place and let you know will go down friday or saturday as i am in philly area. good news is if you're not seeing it on the news (i have not seen any photos of our area) it probably is not very dramatic so that's a good thing!

Awww, love that place...have had your counselors stay at our home 1236 central. we heard from a neighbor that the house directly behind us (on asbury) has a realtor office on ground floor and they took on about 6-8 inches of water on ground floor. that means it hit our garage/breezeway area also. your director Bob Fuhs was our contact. tell him he can contact karen soto and i will try to give him updates when i go check out my place hopefully saturday. so the first floor of your place is probably ok, basement probably took on some water.

houses on the 900 block of 3rd st had over 4 feet of water around them. the water cannot recede from the 3rd st and corinthian area because the storm grates at the boardwalk end of 3rd st that lead out to the outflow pipe are covered over with sand. the water in the street will stay there until the city bulldoozes the sand off of the street.

An update on 16th-22nd from Asbury to Wesley. If this is long, I will add a second post. What I saw was only the exterior of course and I'm not a contractor or anything.
I took a walk today to check out this area. Throughout the area there is debris, in some places a lot of it, that consists mainly of dead leaves, mulch, trash. I also saw several trash cans and wooden trash can holders around, several wooden railroad ties (the kind landscapers use), and some strips of aluminum siding, though only one house appeared to lose a visible patch of siding.
On Asbury between 21 and 19, a few of the lower houses had mulch and dirt up to the first step of the house - it does not appear that water got higher than this, although it may not even be water, but just debris blown up.
19th & Asbury - A lot of debris on the west side of the intersection.
Vicinity of 1816 Asbury - There was one downed tree and one downed line.
18th between Asbury and West - a lot of debris - leaves, trash.
SW corner of 17th and Asbury - There was an uprooted tree.
1604 Asbury - A log in the yard. A couple small trees leaning on the north side of the property, not completely uprooted.
1606 Central - A lot of trash on 16th near Central. There is a large tree in this area that is still standing.
1647 Central - Looks okay.
A downed tree branch (not large) in the middle of the 1700 block of Central.
On the SE corner of 18th and Central - 2 red fence rails uprooted.

Continued:
Forgot to add that in a few cases, there were those exterior light fixtures, the kind that are planted in the ground, that had been uprooted.
19th and Central - all of the corner houses look good. There was a very large branch down in front of the house on the southwest corner, may have been from the tree inside the fence.
20th Street between Central and Asbury - A lot of debris on the SW side of the street.

We did not lose power and I have seen several porch lights and interior lights around the area. I heard that people on the 22 block of West did lose power. Some who did not lose power did lose TV with Comcast. Satellite was still functioning with a few interruptions.
Right now, I have seen traffic along Bay, Haven, West, Central, Asbury and Wesley. The side streets from 16 to 22 have debris, a lot of dead leaves clogging drains but are clear.
I have not been to the south end or downtown.

No, it is the house on the northeast corner, the one that has a small fenced deck. The glass fell onto the back yard, and may have been from a window or a deck table, the kind with a glass top. The worst of that intersection is the debris on some of the sidewalks.

Just ran over to look. It looks okay. I saw a few roof tiles on the ground but it's hard to tell where they came from. The house to the south of yours has a downed tree limb. I met two people from the block who just came in to check so I think you can get in, I heard they are asking you to present ID.
