Historical Museum to Host 'Sandy Stories' at Library on Thursday

The Ocean City Historical Museum invites guests to share stories, images and memories from the storm that struck on Oct. 29, 2012.

We all were impacted by Sandy — on a basic level that is what “historic” means.

The Ocean City Historical Museum and the Ocean City Free Public Library will host an event on Thursday in the library’s Lecture Hall. Similar to the event held last year commemorating the Storm of ’62 nor’easter, this event, Hurricane Sandy: Sharing our Stories, will be part slideshow, part open forum.

Special guests will provide interesting perspectives on Hurricane Sandy. The event starts at 7 p.m. and will wrap up at 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 31.

The museum will also discuss its larger effort, Sandy Stories, to document Hurricane Sandy.

“We need to turn to the public to gather the artifacts that will tell the story of Sandy to future generations,” Museum Director Jeff McGranahan said.

The museum is looking for donations of photographs (printed or digital), video, and other items that relate to the storm. The museum is also looking to conduct interviews with people so that they will have an opportunity to speak in their own words about their personal experiences. The interviews will be recorded and kept in the museum.

“Fifty years from now, we will have these interviews for people to learn about Hurricane Sandy through the individuals who lived through it,” McGranahan said.

The Museum is open 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m to 7 p.m. Thursday; and 11 a.m to 2 p.m. Saturday. Located in the Ocean City Community Center, the museum exhibits images and artifacts that tell the stories of Ocean City’s founding and evolution. A research library contains materials for people looking to do history on their own. A gift shop is also available that carries unique gifts, books and other history items. The Museum is supported by the City of Ocean City.

Duffer

7:09 am on Tuesday, January 29, 2013

It rained. Got a little windy. People's houses got flooded. We cleaned up the mess. Insurance companies drag feet. Government strikes fear in people with over-regulation of the rebuild. End of story.

Sorry. Just getting tiered of the melodrama. Look at history. Ocean city gets hammered by a bad storm about every 20 years like clockwork. 44', 62', 92', 2013. Just beginning to feel tike the story has taken on a life of its own like a tall tale. Things really aren't that bad here. Take a drive an hour north and put things here in OC back into perspective.
