Historical Images: The DuBois Estate on Battersea Road
A weekly feature includes photographs from the Ocean City Historical Museum collection and from the modern era.
This week's "Then and Now" features a home that was demolished in May 2011 at 647 Battersea Road that was know as the DuBois estate.
The first photo shows the home, which was built in 1924, circa 1930. The second photo shows the home as it stood for the last 87 years and as many will remember it. The third image shows the home as it was being demolished on May 16, 2011. The final image shows one of multiple new homes that will be built on the lot. For more information about the home, see this article.
To see more historical photos of Ocean City, visit the Ocean City Historical Museum in the Community Center at 1735 Simpson Ave.

What a shame to tear down such a beautiful home, they don't build them like that anymore. I had a friend that lived in that house is the early 70's. That's a huge lot too so I would bet they will fill it with a few multiplexes. The Historical Society there sucks; all for the love of money. They have to stop selling property to the developers that come to squeeze has many Multi's and Duplex's has they can fit in one spot.

Debi, There is no Historical Society in Ocean City, NJ, however there is a Historical Museum. Did you see the article earlier this week (http://patch.com/A-h3S4) The owners of the property were left with no other choice as they were unable to sell the property . The Ocean City Historical Museum is located in the Community Center Stop in sometime and take a look at the map from 1888. You will learn the town was laid out as it is today by the Lake's in order to fit in as many homes as they could, it was after all, an investment. The lots at this property are zoned for single family homes.

As a neighbor for the last 30 years of the DuBois Estate I am sorry to see the old property go. I will miss the 2 lions that guarded the entrance to the property. Their grass was always groomed to perfection and I will miss running through their sprinkles on the way back from a run on the boardwalk. I know time marches on and people have to do what they have to do but I am already missing the DuBois Estate. Rest In Peace! The memory will live on but it is unfortunate our kids will never get to actually see it. Sad!

Government created this mess just like most messes. Tax code, bad zoning and stupid politicians. Mix that in with greed and you get a bunch uf dumps where once a stately home sat.

Duffer I would hardly call the house being built on the property a "dump". I would also refer you to Michael McMahons comment.

Believe it or not, I used to go sledding down the tiny hill around the house, of course this was back during the Eisenhower administration.

Steve, I too remember the sledding and sandlot football games at the "mansion". Then after words going to Sip-n-snacks for a root beer float. Do you have a brother Bob? If so would love talk with him.

Monk, I have the same question- used to surf with a Bob Glaspey in the 60's. He was a great quaterback for OCHS-1967. Also for Paul Sweeney- did you used to live on Park Place back then? Might remember me as Buddy Hays.

I am the owner of the new property pictured here.
My husband and I spent summers here as kids, met working at Surfer Supplies and we worked very hard so that we could afford to move to OC and raise our family in a town that we love so much.
We have 2 young daughters who will grow up and create new memories here.
I understand that people feel strongly about this property, but please do not insult the home that we are working so hard to build. We have taken the neighborhood into consideration and have tried hard to build a home that is aesthetically pleasing and that maintains the richness this property once held.

You'll need a much thicker skin to justify the new house compared to what could have been done with the DuBois Estate to maintain the history. And why is the new house sitting 3 inches from the sidewalk? While I wish you and your family happiness in your new build, sorry but no comparison at any level through these eyes.

Dana, I believe the SINGLE FAMILY home you are building is beautiful. So all you critics that believe OC needs more single family homes then you should be applauding this build! (I'm addressing you Debi, Oceacityresident, Frank) Go complain about the duplexes somewhere else because all 6 lots are single family lots. These people have no right to criticize your home without even knowing the details or story for the people building the house. I know Dana and her husband have spent a lot of time, money and worry to get their home to where it is today. Persevering through bad weather and setbacks are tough enough but to read critiques about something that you have poured your heart into is tough. SERIOUSLY Richard Jacoby I would love to know where I can read some of your other home reviews. They are so precise and in-depth!
As for all of you other people that miss the Estate so much, where were you when the owner was struggling to pay the taxes. If you all cared so much why didn't you all come together and help the owner pay his taxes so that you could continue to play football or sled. or throw some benefits to raise money to help preserve the estate. I feel really bad for Donald DuBois losing the home his family passed down to him and the situation that he had to go through with the city officials. That must have been someone else s problem.

Dana, build a nice home in a nice neighborhood and let your family enjoy it. " Preservationist" love to tell others what to do with their own property but are unwilling to pay for it. House looks great. Hopefully you are in by the summer

Don't get me started on 'the money chase'. A few years ago, my family inquired about adding a floor to ouy one floor house. You should have seen all the rules, regs and ordinances that stood in our way. Yet one 1/2 block from our house, within eyesight of our front door are some of the ugliest 'barns' masquerading as homes. What a joke, please, please don't "PREACH' to me...thank you.... signed: " a long-time resident "

The problem in this town is the sub-division of existing lots. Its driven purely by greedy realtors and developers. If a lot had a single on it previously that should be all that can be built on it in the future. No more splitting lots and no more putting duplexes where a single once stood.
Frank

While I, too, feel sad that this historical house could have somehow been preserved, the property owners couldn't afford the upkeep and taxes on the property. That said, I wish I could live in a house as lovely as being built currently. Go drive by in person.

Don't forget it was for sale and no one wanted it
However all the lots sold in a few months
Doesn't that tell you something?

That tells me the zoning is screwed up. Developers and property owners know they can sub-divide a lot like that so they set the price out of site. Split it up and make even more. Take splitting lots entirely off the table. There is not a property left on this island that should be split into multiple lots.

Oceancity Resident please read the above article. According to the article this property had no "developers" involved, and the owner had no option but to sub-divide in order to move the property and avoid financial hardship. The article also eludes to the fact that the owner put in some type of stipulation that only single family homes be built on the sub-divided lots. . . .Oceancity Resident, if that is your real name, please learn your facts before you bring up some arguments that are warranted for another patch article and not this one.

James it is not about space but character. I have been going to OC for a long time and it has lost so much of its character. Builders are destroying communities at the shore and in Montogomery Co , PA. All for the almighty $$$.
Jason

Rita, please refer to my comment above to Oceancity Resident. The "builders destroying communities" argument is not warranted in this case. There were no greedy developers here. I agree there are many cases where it is happening but this is not one!

The DuBois' had a family house in Woodbury built in the late 1800's. It was abandoned for years in the early '60's. Just after the city bought it to tear it down, I went through it. There were thousands of docuyments piled in the attic. Many were O.C. deeds, ins piolicies from Oc., hundreds of old checks from the bank building-801 Asbury, and deeds from the gardens. I saved some but there was so much. Some of the gardens lots were sold in the late '20's for thousands above their purchase price only a few weeks earlier. I think one of the family was or ran for O.C./ solicitor in ther'30's.

Ocean City is not a retirement community but a thriving family-oriented town ready to make new traditions and new memories. It is a wonderful thing to see a young family support the community. This is why Ocean City continues to remain a unique and special place. It is a town acceptable to change and growth for new generations. Wishing all young families great memories and new adventures!

I live right across the street from this property. Is it sad to see a grand old home torn down, of course, but please remember that neither Dana nor any of the other new property owners tore that old house down and divided the property. That issue lies with the city and previous owner of the estate so please don't insult these people and the home they've worked so hard to build. I am thrilled that Dana and her family will be my new neighbors and I just hope that the rest of the property owners are as kind and friendly as they are.

Exactly. I don't blame these people for subdividing the property and making as much money as they could off of it. I fault the city for allowing any lots at all to be divided into multiple lots.

Frank- It saddens me to hear that your were verbally attacked for merely trying to reference people to the facts that are just a click away and couple minutes of light reading. Frank please do not let this small minded bully stop or limit you in any way from merely speaking the truth and using common sense to point people to where they can find facts about topics they think they know about. Your persistent attempts mere not in vain and did not go un-noticed by Dana and her family. She thanks you for defending the just.
To the person who attacked you- you should be ashamed of yourself!!! Frank did nothing wrong and was extremely non-confrontational. He was merely a guide trying to refer people to the facts as they were written in the articles. He did nothing to be verbally attacked! Please keep this civil and stop attacking those who don't deserve it.
