This week's "Then and Now" features the building that is located at 641 Asbury Avenue.

The building was built in 1929 and is shown in the first image circa 1935 when it was home to Sheppard's Garage. Note the old clock-face gas pumps on the curb for pull-up service.

Today, the former garage is home to Ocean City Storage and We R Wireless.

Great pic, I don't remember it then; of course, but I do remember it into the 60's, that was an interesting block, along with the 1000 block of Asbury Ave. at the time. People forget, or maybe do not know, that Asbury Ave.wasnt 7th to 10th as the main part of Asbury as it is now. The 600 block as well as the 1000 block had many business's at the time well into the late 60's, an even a few into the early 70's.

I seem to remember a statue of an American Indian at that location when I was a kid. I think it was a storage place even back then (in the 60s/70s). Neat place.

There's a carved wooden statue in front of John & Patti's, next door. I wonder if it's the same one you remember?

Hi Florence, is it the one that can be seen to the left of the garage? I remember the statue had a full headress and was probably a little over six feet tall so that might be the same one...thanks for noticing!!!
