Historical Images: Haven Ave. Garage Has Serviced Cars Since the 1920s
A weekly feature includes photographs from the Ocean City Historical Museum collection and from the modern era.
This week's "Then an Now" features the garage located on the northeast corner of Seventh Street and Haven Avenue.
The first image shows the garage circa 1925. The vehicle shown is a 1925 Flint B-40 Touring, an American auto marque made from 1923 to 1927. Note the train tracks running down Haven Avenue and the gas pub on the curb along Seventh Street. The sign on the side of the building advertises "The Flint Six - Sales and Service."
In the 1930s, the building was used as Ocean City Beach Patrol's Boat House. The building has maintained its original purpose as a garage and is home to Christopher's Foreign Cars as seen in the second image.
A third image shows the same building during the morning high tide of Oct. 29, 2012, as Hurricane Sandy flooded the island.
To see more historical photos of Ocean City, visit the Ocean City Historical Museum in the Community Center at 1735 Simpson Ave.

As always great then and now pics. Any pics of the old Delaware Hotel on Park Place? I was a Bert's Beach boy there for several years in the 60's. Back when Tom Oves rented his bikes out of the basement- in between saving wayward swimmers when the then current guards needed a good oarsman to go out in rough seas!!!

This property was also home to Reese's Lumber yard back in the 1960's.

One of my favorite Ocean City Beach Patrol pictures was taken on Saturday, May 30, 1931 in front of this building. It shows Beach Patrol Captain Jack G. Jernee hitching a lifeboat to a Ford Model A. The lifeboat was going to the 10th Street beach where lifeguards Harry Thorning, Ralph Clayton, and Marley Fitzgerald were on duty.

Ocean City: America's Greatest Family Resort is not available in hardback. Thanks for asking!
At the end of the summer of 1965, I bought a used bike from Tom Oves at the Delaware Hotel. It served me well for many years.

Let me ask one more question-- My grandfather was an OC lifeguard in 1914 and 1915- walter f hays- My family used to have a pic of him in his uniform but last holder has lost it. is his pic in the lifeguard book you wrote? I already ordered the paperback version of the greatest resort book from amazon if his pic is in the guard book I'llk buy that also. Finally, let me tell you a story about Tom Oves- Probably same year that you bought that bike waves were huge I bought the guards lunch kinda a bribe to let the rafts in-lol I had every raft known to Berts shipped from the other beaches and had every one rented out only beach for miles allowing rafts. Then a rip formed by the jetty and two girls side by side on a raft started to go out. I ran back and told Oves- We were standing on the board walk and all the sudden he hands me his wallet that held all the bike rental money for the morning and took off. He grabbed one of the guards and off they went with him in the command rear seat- I believe to this day if he hadn't made that other guard get in that boat, those poor girls may never have gotten home. I kid you not, those waves were 10 ft that day- he still remembers I never touched his wad of bills-- that man could truly row!!

Walt: Go to Ocean City Rowing and Athletic Association website and click the top right--chronological OCBP members. Walter Hays was a rookie lifeguard in 1912 and a lifeguard in 1913, 1914 and 1915. The book-- Ocean City Beach Patrol--has a picture of the 1912 group. I'll bet grandpa is in that picture.
Thanks for the Tom Oves story. He's an OCBP legend!

Just ordered the lifeguard book. Thanks for the rowing web site- As for Tom- we spent every morning together at Park place in the summer- he getting his bikes out and me getting out the rental surf boards (both stored on the ground floor of the old Delaware Hotel) as the sun came up. The summers must have been cooler back then- I remember being cold in late June/early July as we were setting up on many mornings. Thanks for your help- I read all your comments on the Patch!

Also Walt: if you would like to learn about the last OCBP individual to have the title of "Captain", well you won't be able to in Fred Miller's book the Ocean City Beach Patrol. FYI...Ollie Muzslay worked 44-years on the Patrol, 17-as the Captain of the Ocean City Bach Patrol.Fred Miller worked under Captain Muzslay, but refuses to mention Ollie in his beach patrol writings. So much for literary ethics!
The actions of a devious group of individuals, whom Miller is very familiar with, led to the century-old OCBP being placed under the Fire Department and its Captain. The title of Captain of the beach patrol was then eliminated ( thus Muzslay's job) and replaced with the title of "operations director". Subsequently, the City payed $450,000 to former Captain Muzslay to settle a lawsuit.
$450,000 / $50,000 / and $75,000 in settlements to OCBP employees since the Patrol was placed under the Fire Department, the former Chief Foglio and the current(?) director of beach patrol operations Mullineaux ! So how is that working Fred? Additionally, the beach patrol recently lost its certification by the United States Lifeguard Association. The prestigious USLA is recognized by the state of NJ in its Bathing Codes.
Any comments Mr Fred / Historian, or will you take your usual route of silence on controversial issues.

I'm pretty sure my grandfather predates all of the above- he passed away before I was born in 1949. But, thanks for your input.

LOL, I guess Fred is saying "lots of luck" in getting him to address relevant issues. And yet Fred Miller loves to talk-- and likes the beach patrol history. Curious! Keep in mind Fred, "the truth will set you free". It would be great if Fred came out with an "addendum" to his literary genius and was forthright on what really took place more than a decade ago with the Ocean City Beach Patrol. The controversy over Captain Lafferty's replacement, the decade-long scheme to get Bud McKinley in the top OCBP spot which eventually led to the beach patrol being placed under a fire department and its clueless leadership. Poor Bud, some believe his sudden and untimely death might have been related to "the scheme". Fred Miller knows it all, but "lol" in getting him to write about that. In the mind of Fred, everything is perfect. Will Tom Mullineaux become one of Millers appointed Legends? OMG !!!

This feud thing is wearing on and on and on........will it ever end ? Or does one of you have to pass to put it to rest? Even that probably not....... CTA- couldn't agree with you more- except I'd like to add one comment: First, I think Fred's lol was referring to my comment thanking Mike for his input. Second, if you check Mike's posts here:http://oceancity.patch.com/users/michael-hamilton you'll find that this feud is very one sided. Every time Fred makes a comment, Mike responds in the negative- enough said!

Well both CTA and Walt have their points and in a way, I agree. But, "I know what I know" and find it difficult to let it go and let the bums skate, without exposing the stink of the past and current situations. Educate the public with the truth, even though most react with a "who cares attitude".
It is like a Hillary thing (with me) and the stink of her remarks regarding the four dead Americans in Benghazi . "what difference at this point does it make", "coulda, shoulda, woulda". The families of those individuals care and eventually the truth will come out. Not to compare the OC stuff with that, but Miller and the cult will never come clean on "the scheme" and the screwing over of a number of very good people. So yes, I need to move on, but it won't be easy.

A very good first step Michael. I see light at the end of this tunnel. Now Fred, would you please add Ollie Muzslay's name to your "literary genius" err book, and let's put this issue to rest. Lots of Laughs (just to be clear)!
