Help Needed Before Second Storm; Driving Curfew Lifted
A 5 p.m. update from the city on the post-Sandy recovery.
CITY OF OCEAN CITY, NJ
Ocean City Post Storm Update: Monday Nov, 5th 5:00PM
With the approaching Nor’easter forecast for Wednesday into Thursday the City will be accelerating efforts to remove debris from the most flood prone areas west of West Avenue.
Additional heavy equipment will be in use and residents are advised to use caution driving or walking near this equipment.
The City is also requesting assistance with clearing storm drains of leaves and other debris. The City has limited resources at this time so we are asking if you are able to do so, please inspect and clear the storm drains in your neighborhood.
Sand removal operations are continuing on the East side of the island so please use caution in those areas as some traffic restrictions remain in place.
Please do not overfill or place materials around the dumpsters located throughout the City. If a dumpster if full, please take to the Shelter Road location or hold your materials for disposal until after the coming storm.
The City is continuing to sweep the island and remove trash and debris until a schedule is determined. The Shelter Road Recycling Center has extended hours from 7am to 5pm seven days a week until further notice. Dumpsters are for residents, property and business owners ONLY. Contractors CANNOT use dumpsters.
The driving curfew in Ocean City has been lifted however, we ask that you still use caution while driving at night as a number of traffic signals are still not functioning and many roadways are covered with sand and storm debris.
Halloween Trick or Treat in Ocean City will be on Saturday, Nov 10 from 3PM to 5PM Citywide.
Demand for assistance from the local Food Cupboard is at an all time high. Donations of non-perishable food items are being accepted at the Ocean City Civic Center, 6th & Boardwalk, Monday thru Friday 1PM to 3PM.
An organization has been established for the Ocean City Community called the OCNJ C.A.R.E Project, Cleanup and Recovery Effort. This organization will direct volunteers and donations for food, shelter and clothing within the Ocean City Community. More information can be found on facebook atwww.facebook.com/ocnjcare.

If the city trash trucks don't do a sweep of the city there will be a real mess after this second storm. All of the stuff on the curbs will be scattered to the wind.

Thank you for pointing out the obvious. The city is doing all they can to expedite this cleanup and doing a great job. I know many in public works and the city government and they are working tirelessly to bring our conditions to normalcy. Please give credit where credit is due.

I know.....I'm a terrible person for noting the obvious yet tonight as I drove around town there were mountains of garbage on curbs on almost every street. Where will all that garbage be tomorrow afternoon when wind gusts from the ocean hit 55 knots?

I have a suggestion for Duffer. Why not get out there and help with the clean-up??? I agree with DA. The city employees and administration have been working round the clock to get the city cleaned up and back to normal. Some positive reinforcement and credit is due here.

Hummm.....maybe absentee property owners should not have been allowed in (knowing another storm was on it's way) since they came, saw, emptied their houses in alleys, on sidewalks and roadsides and left. If the City is "over-taxed" (ironic), who should clean up other property owner's trash? I suggest taking pictures of what is around your house before this new storm and whatever becomes a missile, hold that property owner liable for the further damage! As far as I am concerned, it's litter!!!!

It is not just the absentee owners putting out the debris. I know plenty of residents who have too because they have lost everything.

I think the city has done an amazing job cleaning up sand and debris! Not only that, there is also huge effort to rebuild the dunes that breached. I'd say they're pretty busy right now.

the city has gone a fantastic job of getting ocean city back on it's feet and if you have any doubts or complaints,, take a trip to our northern communities and see what's going on.

One idea is to band together and get your corner or your alley or your block all taken care of by reaching out to your neighbors and seeing who can take trash up to the dump. There's no use waiting for a city truck when another storm's inbound. This is truly a time to reach out to people and make it happen.
