Filling Some Big Doo Dah Shoes: Peggy King and a 79-Year-Old Baton Twirler
King will be grand marshal of the annual Doo Dah Parade on April 13.
Perhaps the only thing goofier than Ocean City's annual spring Doo Dah Parade is the wait each year to see which bright star will emerge from the time warp to be named grand marshal.
Who can forget when Jay North ("Dennis the Menace") was teleported from the early 1960s to land at the head of the parade in 1996? Or when Soupy Sales ("What's My Line?") traveled from the early 1970s to become the marshal in 2001 (and return again ... and again)?
The parade's founder and the city's public relations director, Mark Soifer, has zeroed in a simple mathematical formula to determine the headliner each year: Take star ... add decades. Thus were born grand marshals Larry Storch ("F Troop"), Mickey Rooney, Captain Noah and a host of other long-forgotten favorites.
So if he's accused of being a bit daft in his selections, Soifer will say that's just the point. What else would anyone expect for a parade founded on the sole premise of being goofy on an early spring day when visitors would not normally be on the Boardwalk in Ocean City?
And so without further ado, the 2013 Doo Dah Parade grand marshal: “Perky” Peggy King of Philadelphia who starred on the George Gobel show in the early days of TV will be grand marshal. Prior to that she toured with the country’s leading big bands including Charlie Spivak, Ralph Flannigan and Ray Anthony and appeared with Mel Torme. (Read more.)
The parade also will include Betty Lambert, a 79-year-old baton twirler from Harmony, Pa.
Lambert will march in the Doo Dah Parade on April 13 in Ocean City.
"The energetic senior still twirls the baton above her head and between her legs and stops during parades to do splits," according to Ocean City Public Relations Director Mark Soifer.
King will entertain at the Doo Dah Comedy Show 7 p.m. April 12 at the Ocean City Music Pier.

We need to start calling this the Who? Parade. Thats what all the kids ask their parents as the retirees ride past. If your under 40 yrs old you have no idea who these people are.
