Crowds Cheer Miss Crustacean and Hermit Crab Races
The two events were held on the beach at Sixth Street on Wednesday afternoon.
The Miss Crustacean Pageant started off Wednesday afternoon with a full crowd dancing to the beat of the local rock band 123 Draw and with contestants putting the final touches on their hermit-crab homes.
What better way to spend a cloudy afternoon on the beach than by cheering at a beauty pageant for mollusks?
The annual event is the brainchild of Ocean City Public Relations Director Mark Soifer -- it's one of many wacky promotions that celebrate life at the beach and tip a hat to Ocean City's mascot, Martin Z. Mollusk.
Some of the themes for the crustacean queens were Crab Kate Middleton and Pippa, Keeping up with the Krabdaschians, and Crabella Devil, while others focused on sports, Ocean City and Angry Birds.
Winners for the event are as follows:
3rd Place: Kassey, Kiley, and Jordan from Lancaster, PA, with Crabyella and Prince Clawing
2nd Place: Anna Parker of Sewell, NJ with Crabella Devil
1st Place: Teresa Dougten and Rachel Louviax of NJ with Crab Kate Middleton and Pippa
Local Business Division
2nd Place: Air Circus with Pirates
1st Place: Old Salt with Keeping up with the Crabdashians.
The hermit crab races quickly followed with about 30 crabs competing.
Green Lantern, a speedy hermit crab belonging Kathleen Mark of Pennsylvania won the King of Klutz Championship Racing Plaque posting 31 seconds over the six-foot oval track.
"The winning time was verified by NASCRAB, the National Association of Crab Activities at the Beach," Soifer said.
