Effective immediately, Halloween is postponed in New Jersey.
Gov. Chris Christie issued an executive order declaring that no New Jersey town can hold trick-or-treating today, Oct. 31. If towns had planned to do so, they must move trick-or-treating and any public celebrations to Monday, Nov. 5.
Towns that already moved trick-or-treating to another day other than Oct. 31 can keep their plans, but state officials are still suggesting Monday instead.
“I’ve taken this action to minimize additional risks to lives and the public safety as we begin the process of rebuilding and recovering from Hurricane Sandy,” Christie said in a statement. “In too many communities in our state, the damage and losses from this storm are still being sorted out, and dangerous conditions abound even as our emergency management and response officials continue their work.
“As governor, it is my responsibility to use all available resources of the state government to protect against the emergency created by Hurricane Sandy – postponing Halloween celebrations by five days is a commonsense and necessary step to accomplish that.”

Its a good idea, but Saturday or Sunday might have been better. But I also realize some of our towns have been totally devastated so I understand.

is everyone that concerned about halloween . my kids told me there not going out because there are kids that don't have a house to go to or live in.
I felt proud of my kids for saying that.they told me to donate whatever you can to the families that are in need.I have three kids 12-9-7.
so if you are that much concerned, these kids aren't going to have much of a christmas either

You should be very proud of your kids. They truly understand (well beyond their years) what's important in life. Great job parents!

Keep in mind that we turn clocks back on Saturday so those of us with young children are going to run into a problem with it being dark earlier. So with getting out of work at 5pm, pick up kids at 5:30 it will be nice and dark :(
West Deptford should keep it on Saturday, my neighborhood has no damage.

It is not a holiday it is a tradition, Wouldn't it be nice if it was cancelled just this year out of respect for the children who lost parents in this storm and the ones who will still be in shelters. The candy could have been sent to our troops. The kids all have some celebration at school and It is not a bad thing to teach kids that sometimes they can't have or do what they want, because others are suffering, Kids get it, "grownups' dont,

Trick or treating is only one part of Halloween. There are so many things you can do with your kids to have fun. Kids in our town were lucky. Our high school runs something called haunted high school and kids 4th grade and under can come trick or treat in a safe indoor environment.

I understand the devastation of what has happened to our communities but Halloween is a holiday and a tradition for children. So much has been taken from them in the last 48 hours it is not fair to say who cares...THEY CARE. Even the poor children who lost everything care. SOOO It is important that we know when it is to give some normalcy back to our children..to let them know we move on and not keep dwelling on what we can't change.

Yes Jillian You are so right. Let the kids go out and have a little fun to get their minds off of the devastation that is all around them.

I agree with Jillian...these kids need a little bit of fun...a friend of mine suggested dressing up in costume..nothing scary of course...and going to shelters and giving out candy to the kids...and care packages for the adults....this is a tragic time yes but there is no need to be rude..."they need to know you can't always have what you want" that's a little out of line if u ask me....the kids in shelters need to have their lives lightened up a little bit...

HOW ABOUT THE CHILDREN GIVE CANDY OUT TO SHELTERED PEOPLE OR GET TOGETHER AND SEND TO OUR TROOPS. TIME TO TEACH THEM THE GIVING PART OF LIFE SINCE MOST OF THEM ARE OUT OF SCHOOL. MOST KIDS TODAY ARE ALL ABOUT RECIEVING AND NEVER ABOUT GIVING

Who peed in Julie's cornflakes? I want things to be normal again too that why I think it's important to have Halloween. We can worry about Halloween AND helping those in need by allowing people to stay in our homes and donating to shelters (like me and my children did). So with that said..... When is Manchester dong trick or treating? Is it Saturday or Monday? Anybody ?

I believe the schools should've set up trunk or treating, then those who wanted to participate could and anyone who has been devastated wouldn't be bothered by trick or treaters. Love the idea of dressing up and handing out candy at shelters also.

Carol: yes, this is from the Borough of Point Pleasant Facebook page which you can "like" if you want: Borough of Point Pleasant
Halloween:
Stop & Shop has offered their parking lot for trick or treating on Monday, November 5, 2012. We do not recommend door-to-door trick or treating but leave that decision up to individuals.
