Boardwalk Guide: What's Still Open?
Our regular watch for businesses and attractions on the Ocean City Boardwalk

It's midday on a Thursday in December and about the only thing traveling the Ocean City Boardwalk is a howling west wind.
Although a small handful of winter stalwarts–Mack & Manco Pizza and The Original Fudge Kitchen, among them–provide safe haven from the winter weather, the boardwalk appears largely shuttered for the season.
But a funny thing happens in the next two days: A pocket of warm air moves in from the west and close behind the unseasonable weather the crowds move in. And a surprisingly large contingent of boardwalk merchants are there to greet them.
"I don't care when it is, if you get the sunshine, it's a pleasure," says Bob Falk, 74, the owner of the Sun 'N' Fun variety shop near 12th Street. He's looking across the boardwalk to an ocean that's sparkling in the bright sun, and he seems to be as happy to be outside breathing fresh air as the visitors strolling the boardwalk.
Falk talks about the beauty of the island: "You gotta be thankful," he says. And the character of its residents and visitors: "It's a town of civility. A lot of that is missing today in America."
But ultimately it comes down to business, and Falk estimates that 40 percent of his annual revenue comes in the off-season between Labor Day and Memorial Day. And that's the biggest difference between now and when he started in business 51 years ago.
He and his wife operate other New Jersey stores in Keansburg and Seaside Heights, along with one other location in Rehoboth Beach, DE. He said when he started in business decades ago, the season started on the Fourth of July and ended on Labor Day.
But over time a series of shoulder-season promotions have let visitors know that spring, fall and even winter can be great times to get away to the shore.
Mary Louise Hayes, an Ocean City woman who runs an energy healing service, was picking up a $5 rash guard.
"This is the best time to buy on the boardwalk," she said.
