Bicyclist Flown To Hospital After Colliding With SUV

The accident occurred on Friday night.

A bicyclist was flown to Atlanticare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City on Friday night after an accident at the intersection of 31st Street and West Avenue involving the cyclist and an SUV, according to Capt. Ray Clark of the Ocean City Fire Department.

The fire department received the call at 8:50 p.m. and the cyclist suffered injuries to his legs and head, said Clark.

The cyclist, who was conscious and alert when the fire department arrived, was then taken by ambulance to the Ocean City Airport, where he was flown to the hospital at 9:11 p.m., Clark said.

The identity of the cyclist, the driver of the SUV and whether any summonses were issued was not made immediately available by the Ocean City Police Department on Friday night.

Patch will continue to update this story as more information is available.

West is not a safe place to ride a bike period. I know this was not on the area considered for the "wetlands bike path," but the people who fought it "friends of the wetlands" or not, should be feeling a tad bit guilty about now.

You're kidding right? That's like comparing apples and giraffes! 1. As you say, it's not even in that specific area of the wetlands road folly, so who's to say the bicyclist would even have intended to use the "path"? 2. OC can't even maintain it's own roads so why would it want to build a new one for millions of taxpayers' dollars? (See the other stories in proposed special assessments just to catch-up with long overdue road and drainage projects). 3. The study using NJ/OC taxpayers' money that the PROPONENTS of the wetlands road wholeheartedly supported be done, determined (in addt'n to the estimated millions in cost) that is was environmentally unsound to build a road in the wetlands and would likely not get NJDEP permits. 4. While it is very unfortunate someone got hurt, government is not responsible to be certain all individuals-- drivers, bikers, pedestrians, are responsible themselves-- especially in summer, at night, on a busy road. 5. So, NO, the FOTW should NOT "be feeling a tad bit guilty about now"-- because their cause has been proven valid, while the wetlands road was not; and their cause has absolutely nothing to do w/ this unfortunate accident whatsoever, or any others in or around OC.

Go away Mr. Alessandrine, PLEASE. You have done your service to Mr. Rendell, and I'm sure he is appreciative (another job in the offing?). The residents of Ocean City however are sick of your weaselly politics - we've told you that twice (0 for 2), but you just won't go away. Worse, you stick your nose (opinions) into local items thinking you still have some credibility. Really??

Riding a bike in OC in the summer is NOT safe at all!!! No riding on the boards or sidewalk??? Now with that stupid pedestrian crosswalk law, people walking and riding think they can just waltz or glide right in front of cars. Motorists need to slow down, walkers and bikers need to wait for traffic to come to a complete stop.......... AND wear helmets people!!! I hope the unfortunate cyclist has a speedy recovery :-).

Who in their right mind would be riding a bike at almost 9:00 at night in this town. As a driver I find it very difficult to see people walking across crosswalks at night as it is. Then there are the vacationers who take the crosswalk law as a summertime right to take free reign of the streets any way they want b/c if anything happens the driver will be at fault. They throw common sense caution to the and wind dart out from between cars in the middle of the block, hang out in small groups on the streets and ride bikes wearing dark colors so that anyone without night vision goggles can't see them. Perhaps we need a additional law that says no bike riding after sundown. I've taken to driving with my brights on intown at night just to help me avoid a potential tragedy.

I live on West Ave and it is like a highway. To many cars going to fast. You really take your life in your hands walking and biking in this town. Slow Down People!!! I wish they would post a 30mph on all of West Ave.

The "Crosswalk Law" actually has created additional hazards. Pedestrians and cyclists just walk across intersections with no regard to motorists. As I drive in town at the posted speed, people will be on the sidewalk and just blatantly proceed to walk across the street causing motorists to stop on the dime. The cyclists are not permitted on the sidewalk, ergo, biking on the street. Very dangerous on busy streets such as Asbury, West, 9th, etc.....
Well wishes to the cyclist and compassion for the motorist.

Too many cyclists in the summer...no regard for traffic laws, which they too are supposed to follow. The bikes are not pedestrians, yet they seem to think they are.

As a fellow cyclist who knows this rider and knows that he was wearing bright orange and headed home with the last few minutes of daylight, it's pretty funny you all speak of disregard for the rules when he was riding in the bike lane on west ave. While the suv involved was crossing west ave. and had a stop sign.

Best wishes for his speedy recovery.

And increased regard for safety - and one another - among all OC drivers, bikers, and pedestrians.

too many people on bicycles believe that they are protected by the pedestrian crossing law. people on bicylces are not pedestrians, they are operating a vehicle and are subject to the same laws as people who are driving cars.

Vic your absolutely correct. 2 weeks ago I was driving north on Bay Ave near the airport and had a woman jumping up and down, screaming, cursing and pointing at a pedestrian crosswalk sign because I didn't stop and her family (all on bikes) were trying to cross Bay Ave.
