Photo Gallery: New Route 52 Bridges Taking Shape

Guardrails block the view — but most beams are in place for the new spans leaving Ocean City.

Most beams are in place for the new bridge span leaving Ninth Street in Ocean City, and most of the old Ninth Street Bridge is gone. Some beams on the downslope of this bridge (heading to Somers Point) still need to be placed.

January's relatively mild weather was a welcome relief to many who suffered through last winter's snowstorms, but the warm conditions appear also to have been a boon to construction crews working on the Route 52 causeway replacement project.

Beams are in place for the two new bridges on the westbound span — with the exception of two short sections (on the downslope of the bridge leaving Ocean City and the upslope of the bridge entering Somers Point).

The crews are working to meet a Memorial Day 2012 deadline to complete the bridge work and open the causeway to two lanes of traffic in each direction.
