Drop In on OCHS Surf Team Scholarship Fundraiser
The Feb. 22 event includes a raffle for three boards from local shaper Brian Wynn.
Ocean City High School won its 18th consecutive National Scholastic Surfing Association Northeast Championship in October 2011, and while Hurricane Sandy postponed the 2012 championship until the spring, the team will graduate 12 seniors in June.
The entire community is invited to a fundraiser for those seniors 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point. The event includes food, raffles, door prizes and dancing.
All money raised after expenses will go to senior surf team members who are bound for college or the military.
Tickets are $30 at the door. Advance tickets ($25) are available at Ocean City surf shops.
The event includes a raffle of three boards designed by local shaper Brian Wynn.
Ocean City residents Wayne Blizzard and Mike Lukens helped start the scholarship fundraiser last year as a way to recognize athlete's in one of Ocean City High School's most successful programs. Several have moved on to excel in higher ranks of competitive surfing — including Rob Kelly, a 23-year-old Ocean City High School graduate whose sixth-place finish netted him $2,500 on the Association of Surfing Professionals North American tour in Puerto Rico this week.
The National Scholastic Surfing Association championship has been rescheduled for April 13 at Third Street Beach in Ocean City.
