Aerial Tour of Ocean City Shows Major Storm Damage

Hurricane Sandy left eroded beaches, flooded streets and damaged structures.

Two days after a massive coastal storm caused record flooding in Ocean City, a tour of the island by helicopter shows the extent of the damage.

All Ocean City beaches from Corson's Inlet to Great Egg Harbor Inlet appear to have suffered extensive erosion — with dune systems completely wiped out at the north and south ends. Sand-covered streets show the reach of the ocean during the storm — the ocean met the bay throughout much of the southern end of the island.

The Ocean City Boardwalk and island homes and businesses appear to have escaped devastating damage, but they were not completely spared. From smashed windows at the end of the Ocean City Music Pier to missing Boardwalk ramps to damaged beachfront homes, the storm did leave extensive damage.

Check out the videos in the gallery above that move from Corson's Inlet to Great Egg Harbor Inlet then back along the bayside and downtown.

(With thanks to Neil and Susan Kaye.)

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for the videos. It's the first we have seen of our beloved Ocean City. The media thinks the world stops at Atlantic City. We are
truly blessed. The Icon Piers are still there. If anyone has 17th street , the helo stopped at 19th and picked up at 14th. Need to see Oceans 17. Thanks so much.

We were by there last night. The street is clear and I saw no property damage. However, there were people inside the office on the 22nd St side corner of Asbury and some wood on the ground, so I don't know if there was damage to the property or if they were removing boards. Some people checking on the office on the Asbury side, and in Uncle Bill's. The properties look okay, but there is a lot of debris. We are a couple blocks down and never lost power.

Just had the dogs out. The sand barrier that the city put up at the beach entrance to 23rd street held. Walking west, I saw some porch and interior lights, but not on West, so they may not have power yet. Ran into a fellow who had a place on Simpson in the 20s, he also did not have power. There was a very large tree uprooted on the east side of West, the 2nd or third property in.

Yeah I think there was around 1 to 2 foot of water there but its a whole lot better than Central which is now sand covered. The dunes breached from around 50th South. I know someone who lives at 48 and Central and his place was OK. But it's worse as you go South of there.

For many, The Patch provided the most up-to-date and most comprehensive reporting and images of the storm and ifs aftermath. I hope people appreciate your fine work and understand the need to support The Patch so that you can continue to provide this valuable service to our region and to Ocean City in particular. I drove thru there today and talked to some of the residents. One resident stated that a 3 foot wall of water came thru. There's stuff on the street (mattresses, appliances, furniture, etc.) But it probably depends on exactly where you live and how high your house is elevated. I talked to other residents and they were OK (no water in the living area).

Maureen, all disaster relief is geared toward homeowners, if it is a second home or rental property, you will not get much help from anywhere. I am in Nashville and lost a rental property in our 2010 flood. No FEMA, no Red Cross, you may be eligible for SBA loan, but the bureacracy and incompetance was unbelievable so I passed. You can claim a casualty loss on your taxes which is pretty big. I grew up in PA, visit OC every summer, live in Nashville.

I can not adequately express how valuable your coverage of Ocean City is, especially during times such as these. It is not only for the pertinent info but for my own piece of mind and ease of tension and anxiety that I am so very grateful. Even those words sound hallow compared to the gratitude and appreciation I feel in my heart. Thank you to all the kind, caring, compassionate residents posting reassuring photos and words of comfort to the discussion board. I just received this update from one of the realtors in town. Hmmmm... :-/
"For the most part Ocean City fared well through the storm and most parts of the island have little or no real damage. However, the far south and north ends were hit hardest and have a minimum of debris and overwash issues and some actual property damage. We anticipate that the city will continue to restore full access to all parts of the island quickly and that the full clean up process will occur as quickly as well. We do not anticipate any lasting effects to our beautiful island or to our rental activities."

There's about 4 foot of sand on Third but Fourth Street on the beach block was passable. As I recall I came up 5th Street (heading into work) and saw furniture and appliances on the curb. A lot of those homes are close to street level though. If your house is elevated you should be OK.

I was in OC yesterday to check out my home between 39th and 40th on West. No wind damage. I am on the second floor and all is OK, even had electricity. The first floor had water, but seems like only the carpet was damaged, no other apparent problems. But a word of warning, my downstairs neighbors had electricity but their circuit breakers popped. When I reset them, I heard a sizzling sound. They had an extension cord on the floor that apparently got wet. When I turned their power back on, the wet extension cord got really hot and if I was not there it may have started a fire. I unplugged everything. So if you had any water enter your home on the first floor, please check your extension cords and outlets.

What was amazing to me was the wonderful condition of almost all homes I drove past. Did not go into the lagoons or south of 40th, but other than debris and first floor water damage, we dodged a huge bullet.

And to add to the others - Doug and the Patch - you have been a lifeline.
